When Your Dog Loves Your Cat a Little Too Much
Maple Mae has entered her “dramatic flop” era 😭🐶 She rolled right onto Summer like, “Hey… want to be friends?” And Summer — the queen of quiet judgment — just stared into the void like she’s never seen this dog in her life.
The best part? These two are actually inseparable now. Maple Mae adores her big sister Summer, and Summer secretly loves all the attention. They’re the funniest little dog-and-cat duo in our house.
If you have a Goldendoodle and a tuxedo cat (or any dog-and-cat pair!), you already know the chaotic friendship energy.
More Maple + Summer moments coming soon 🐶🐈⬛💛

When I first brought Maple Mae, my vivacious Goldendoodle puppy, home, I had one major concern: would she ever get along with Summer, our regal tuxedo cat? Like many Goldendoodle parents, I’d heard they were generally friendly, but the idea of a chaotic puppy and a discerning feline coexisting felt like a stretch. The question 'do Goldendoodles get along with cats?' was constantly on my mind. Our initial introductions were, let’s just say, memorable! Maple Mae, with her signature boundless energy, immediately tried to befriend Summer with what I now affectionately call her 'dramatic flop.' She’d just roll right into Summer’s space, tail wagging furiously, almost as if saying, 'Hey, wanna be best friends?!' Summer, a connoisseur of quiet judgment, would simply stare into the void, giving Maple Mae the cold shoulder. Honestly, there were moments early on when I truly doubted if they would ever bond. I caught myself wondering if I had made a mistake, seeing the cat's aloofness and the dog's relentless pursuit. But slowly, something shifted. There was a specific moment, just a few weeks in, when I looked over and saw Summer actually grooming Maple Mae. It was a tiny gesture, but that was the moment I knew my puppy and cat were going to be best friends. It wasn't an instant fairytale, but a gradual acceptance built on curiosity and, eventually, affection. So, to answer the burning question: 'Do Goldendoodles get along with cats?' From my experience, absolutely yes, but it often requires patience and understanding of both animals' personalities. Goldendoodles, with their generally gentle and playful nature inherited from their Golden Retriever and Poodle parents, often possess the right temperament for cohabiting with cats. They’re usually not naturally aggressive and are often more curious than predatory. However, every dog and cat is an individual! If you're considering introducing a Goldendoodle to your feline friend, or vice-versa, here are a few tips I learned along the way: Slow Introductions are Key: Don't just throw them together. We started with scent swapping (letting them smell each other’s blankets/toys) and then brief, supervised meetings with a barrier between them. Give the Cat an Escape Route: Cats need to feel safe and have places they can retreat to, high up where the dog can’t reach. Summer has several cat trees and shelves she can jump to, which really helped her feel secure. Positive Reinforcement: Reward calm behavior from both animals with treats and praise. Make their interactions positive, even if they're just tolerating each other at first. Manage Play Energy: Goldendoodles can be boisterous. Teach your Goldendoodle appropriate play (no chasing the cat relentlessly) and keep initial interactions short and sweet. Patience is a Virtue: It took time for Maple Mae and Summer to become truly inseparable. There were still days of chases and grumpy glares. Don't get discouraged if it's not love at first sight. Now, these two are genuinely inseparable. Maple Mae adores her "big sister" Summer, and Summer, despite her queen-like demeanor, secretly loves all the attention and warmth. They nap together, chase toys (sometimes!), and even share sunbeams. It's truly the most chaotic yet heartwarming friendship I could have asked for. If I can achieve this with my dramatic Goldendoodle and judgmental tuxedo cat, you can too!
