I want to talk about this specific kind of tired because I think it is different from normal tiredness and most of us have been calling it the wrong thing for a long time.

It is not tired in the way that a good night of sleep fixes. It is not tired in the way that a slow morning resolves. It is a specific kind of depletion that shows up reliably after noon regardless of how much rest you got the night before and grinds through everything you still have to do in the second half of the day.

You are not dragging because you are lazy. You are not dragging because you are not tough enough. You are dragging because your cortisol has been running a program that burns through your energy reserves faster than your body can restore them and by the afternoon there is genuinely nothing left.

Chronically elevated cortisol does not just make you feel stressed. It depletes your adrenal function over time. It disrupts your natural energy production cycle. It keeps your body spending resources on a stress response that never fully resolves instead of on the restoration and repair that would actually give you something to work with in the afternoon.

A lot of what we chalk up to just being busy or just being a mom is actually something that can be understood and addressed at the root.

Comment CORTISOL and I'll share what I do every day to address mine 🌿

6/17 Edited to

... Read moreMany of us experience a distinct afternoon energy crash that feels different from usual tiredness — it’s not just about needing more sleep or a slow start to the day. From my personal experience, this type of depletion is often linked to elevated cortisol levels, which can persistently drain your body’s energy reserves. I noticed this pattern especially after becoming a mom, where pushing through the second half of the day often felt like sheer willpower. What’s tricky is that this exhaustion isn’t due to laziness or lack of resilience but is a genuine physiological response linked to stress hormones. Elevated cortisol puts your body in a constant state of readiness, making it hard to recover and properly restore energy. What helped me was becoming mindful of my stress triggers and incorporating daily practices such as mindful breathing, short walks outdoors, and consistent hydration. I also adjusted my nutrition to support adrenal health by including nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains. Importantly, setting clear boundaries around work and parenting duties helped reduce chronic stress. Understanding that this depletion is rooted in our biology rather than merely busy lifestyles or fatigue helped me approach my days more compassionately. If you often find yourself running on empty after noon, consider how your cortisol may be influencing your energy and explore sustainable habits to support your adrenal health. This approach not only improved my energy levels but also helped me feel more balanced and capable throughout the day.
