I want to be honest that it was not one dramatic moment. It was a gradual understanding of what was actually in what I was using and what it was doing to my scalp over time.
Silicones. They make your hair feel smooth and look shiny immediately. What they are actually doing is coating your strand and your scalp with a layer that builds up over time, blocks your follicles, and prevents anything actually nourishing from getting through. The more you use them the more dependent your hair becomes on them and the worse it looks without them.
Sulfates. Effective at removing buildup. Too effective. They strip everything including the natural oils your scalp produces to maintain its own healthy balance. When those oils are stripped your scalp goes into overdrive to replace them. You end up greasier faster and washing more frequently which strips it again.
Fillers. Ingredients that take up space in the formula without doing anything meaningful for your hair or your scalp. Water heavily diluting the actives. Preservatives in quantities that do not serve your hair health.
What I use now is built around fermentation science. Bioactivated nutrients that actually penetrate and support your scalp microbiome instead of disrupting it. Vegan and cruelty free. Sulfate and silicone free. No added water diluting the formula.
The difference in my scalp was something I noticed before I noticed anything changing in my hair. Because when your scalp is finally getting what it needs everything that grows from it reflects that.

Switching away from traditional hair care products was a game-changer for me, but it wasn’t overnight—it was a gradual process of learning what was actually in the products I used daily and how these ingredients affected my scalp health. Silicones, for example, give an instant smoothness and shine, but they form a barrier over your hair strands and scalp. Over time, this buildup can clog hair follicles, preventing essential nutrients from reaching the scalp and causing dependency on these products to maintain the illusion of healthy hair. Sulfates might seem like a good solution for cleaning buildup, but they strip away natural scalp oils along with dirt. This causes your scalp to overcompensate by producing more oil, leading to the frustrating cycle of greasy hair and frequent washing that only worsens the problem. Many products are also packed with fillers—ingredients like excessive water and preservatives that dilute active components, offering little to no real benefit to hair or scalp health. What truly made a positive difference in my hair care journey was embracing products based on fermentation science. These bioactivated nutrients support the scalp microbiome, which is essential for healthy hair growth. The formulas I now use are sulfate-free, silicone-free, vegan, cruelty-free, and avoid unnecessary dilutants, giving my scalp the nourishment it needs to thrive. I noticed improvements in my scalp before I saw changes in my hair’s appearance—this was a clear sign that healthier hair starts with a balanced scalp environment. For anyone struggling with dull, greasy, or unmanageable hair, I highly recommend paying close attention to the ingredient lists in your hair care products and considering alternatives that truly nurture your scalp. Taking this approach has proven that going beyond just surface-level smoothness towards real scalp health can lead to long-lasting, natural beauty in your hair.
