2 minutes of working Prim! I’m mostly posting this for me but, will share for any other peeps too who want to learn! Right now we’re working on…
- Checking in during distractions while stationary
- Checking in while in movement (and not getting under my feet!)
- Understanding we can indeed chew AND walk 🤣
- Not getting to say hello to people
- New sights and sounds like strollers, e-bikes/scooters, cars passing by
- Staying within position beside me
She’s picking up fantastic!
Training an American Bully to walk well and stay focused can be both rewarding and challenging. Based on my recent experience working with a young Bully named Prim, I've found that patience, consistency, and short training sessions lead to the best progress. One helpful approach is to break down the training into specific skills, such as checking in when distracted, maintaining position while stationary, and continuing focus while in motion. For instance, teaching your dog that it’s okay to chew but still walk calmly beside you requires practice and understanding your dog’s pacing. It’s important to gradually expose your dog to new sights and sounds like strollers, e-bikes, scooters, and passing cars. This exposure helps them become more comfortable with everyday distractions in their environment. During busy walks, staying calm and not rushing the training is key. Remember, not every greeting or distraction should lead to a response. Teaching your American Bully not to jump or say hello to every passerby helps reinforce self-control. From my personal experience, using positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise when your dog stays beside you or remains focused can make a big difference. Short 2-minute focused sessions several times a day kept training enjoyable and manageable for both of us. Lastly, always be mindful of your dog’s comfort and pace. Some dogs may feel overwhelmed by too much stimulation, so adjusting the environment and training steps to their needs creates a positive learning experience. Overall, consistent practice in real-world settings combined with fun and encouragement makes training your American Bully an enjoyable journey. Keep experimenting with what techniques work best for your furry friend, and celebrate the small wins along the way.
