Skincare Advice I'd Never Give To 40+ Women
Things I’d NEVER tell my over-40 facial clients to do with their skin 👇
As a 25+ year Esthetician, I would never recommend washing your face with a bar of soap—even if you have oily skin.
After 40, protecting your skin barrier becomes even more important. Stripping your skin can actually lead to more irritation, dehydration, and skin issues.
I also don’t automatically recommend every product with niacinamide. While it can be a great ingredient, it can be irritating for some people—especially if you’re already using retinol, AHAs, or other active ingredients. Many people don’t realize niacinamide may be what’s causing their redness or irritation. I also don’t believe you need 15 different skincare products to have healthy, glowing skin. In my experience, a simple skincare routine over 40 with the right ingredients often delivers better results than an overcomplicated routine filled with trendy products.
The goal is healthier skin, fewer fine lines, better hydration, and a stronger skin barrier—not irritation and inflammation.
These are the same beauty tips over 40 that I share with my facial clients because good skincare should be effective, simple, and sustainable.

Having worked extensively with women over 40, I can share some insights beyond typical advice that really make a difference. One crucial aspect I've noticed is the importance of avoiding harsh cleansing methods like using bar soap. While it may seem convenient, soap often strips the skin’s natural oils, which can worsen dryness and cause irritation especially as the skin ages and becomes more delicate. Protecting the skin barrier is essential after 40 because a strong barrier helps retain moisture and protect against environmental damage. Ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and gentle antioxidants can support this barrier effectively. From personal experience, introducing nourishing moisturizers that contain these elements has consistently helped clients achieve plumper, smoother skin without triggering sensitivity. Another common misunderstanding is about niacinamide. While popular and beneficial for many, it isn’t universally well-tolerated, especially combined with other potent actives like retinol or AHAs. I've had clients mistakenly attribute redness to many products before realizing niacinamide was the culprit. It's best to introduce it gradually and patch test, or alternate it with other treatments. Simplicity is key—I've seen clients overwhelmed by complicated routines with too many products, which can actually stress the skin and create unwanted reactions. A streamlined routine focusing on cleansing, hydration, and sun protection, complemented by carefully chosen actives, usually delivers the healthiest results. Finally, I emphasize consistency over quick fixes. Healthy mature skin responds best to sustainable care, not trendy fads. Listening to your skin’s needs and adjusting gently over time is the approach I recommend. This mindset offers realistic improvements in fine lines, hydration, and overall skin resilience, promoting confidence and comfort in one’s skin at every age.
