Loc tips and mistakes 🪢
My 1,000 days with locs recently just passed & i thought a nice way to commemorate this milestone is a tips & mistakes post for you guys. some of these are things i wish i knew when i first started my journey
I: Everyone’s experiences are different but for me the coil method was the easiest way for my locs to loc up more easily. The coil method binds your hair strands together & depending on how loose or tight your curls are, it’ll be easier for you to
II: Dying your locs early in your loc days can cause many problems for your hair. Your hair can become extremely dry & fried because of bleach & not taking care of your hair after the dyeing process. Dry hair will lead to breakage among your locs, especially if bleach or bad dye was put on your roots. It’s best to dye your hair before loc’n up or a year or two into your loc journey (pretty much when it’s in the matured stage of locs).
III-V: Depending on what stage your locs are in you should be keeping your retwist in for atleast a month or more. Keeping your retwist in can benefit your root growth & scalp hydration. When in the beginning of the loc process, taking out your retwist can delay the budding stage.
VI: Beads & shells look really nice but don’t overdo it & create more weight on your locs. It can lead to breakage & it can delay the growth in your roots.
VII: Loc ponytails are only meant for style. keeping them in for longer than a days worth of work or school. Longer than 7-8 hours can be hard on your head depending on how tight you do it. Just be mindful when doing them.

The journey to healthy locs can be filled with challenges, but understanding key tips can help. One crucial tip is to use the coil method, which is particularly effective for locking hair based on individual curl types. This method not only helps in starting the loc process but also assists in creating a strong foundation for your hair. Additionally, timing is important when it comes to dyeing your locs. Early dyeing can lead to significant damage; therefore, it’s ideal to wait until your locs have matured, usually after a year or two. Another valuable insight is that maintaining your retwist for at least a month aids in root growth and scalp hydration. Rushing this process can lead to delays in the budding stage, making it counterproductive. Moreover, while decor like beads and shells can enhance your style, it's wise to limit their use. Excessive weight on the locs can result in breakage. Finally, remember that loc ponytails should be worn with caution; keeping them in for extended periods can cause strain on your scalp. By keeping these tips in mind, your loc journey can be more enjoyable and fruitful.
