Calving season is upon us 🇨🇦
Calving season is one of the most crucial times in cattle farming, especially here in Canada where weather conditions can be unpredictable. From my experience, preparation is key to minimizing risks during this demanding period. It's important to ensure that the cows are in good health and properly fed with nutrient-rich diets as they approach calving. This boosts their immunity and helps fetal development. Having a clean, dry, and quiet calving area greatly improves the chances of successful births and the health of both the calves and their mothers. I always recommend monitoring cows closely as their due date approaches, watching for signs such as restlessness or changes in udder size that indicate imminent labor. The moment the calves begin arriving, it is essential to make sure they breathe properly and start nursing soon to receive colostrum, which is vital for their early immunity. Providing warmth is necessary, especially during colder Canadian springs, to prevent hypothermia in newborn calves. Over the years, I've also learned that keeping detailed records during calving season helps track each cow’s calving history and any complications that arise. This information assists in managing future calvings and spotting problems early. Lastly, don’t hesitate to seek support from veterinarians or experienced farmers if difficulties arise. Calving season can be challenging but rewarding, and with the right care and attention, the arrival of healthy calves is one of the most satisfying moments in farming life.
