การฝึกคุมจิตตามแนวทางพุทธวิถีนั้น มีความสำคัญมากในการดำเนินชีวิตประจำวัน เพราะจิตของมนุษย์นั้นเปรียบเสมือนลูกศรที่อาจจะเหวี่ยงไปไม่ถูกเป้าหมาย หากไม่มีการควบคุมให้ดีเหมือนช่างศรที่ต้องดัดลูกศรให้อยู่ในทิศทางที่ถูกต้อง จากประสบการณ์ที่ได้ลองฝึกสติและควบคุมจิตใจ พบว่าการจดจ่อกับลมหายใจและตั้งสติให้อยู่กับปัจจุบันเป็นวิธีที่ช่วยลดความฟุ้งซ่านและจิตใจดิ้นรนที่มักจะเกิดขึ้นในเวลาที่เครียดหรือวิตกกังวล สอดคล้องกับหลักธรรมที่กล่าวว่าจิตใจนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่ควบคุมยากและเปลี่ยนแปลงรวดเร็ว จึงต้องใช้ความอดทนและความเข้าใจในการฝึกฝน นอกจากนี้ การละเว้นกามคุณ ที่เปรียบเสมือนไร้แหล่งน้ำของปลาที่ถูกโยนขึ้นบก เป็นวิธีที่ได้ผลดีในการช่วยให้จิตสงบ ไม่แสวงหาแต่สิ่งยั่วยุที่ทำให้กระจายใจ ซึ่งจะนำมาซึ่งความทุกข์ใจ วิตกกังวลดังที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงสอน สิ่งที่น่าประทับใจอีกอย่างคือการที่จิตเมื่อได้รับการฝึกฝนอย่างมีเหตุผลแล้ว จะกลายเป็นจิตที่นุ่มนวลสุขุมและนำมาซึ่งความสุขที่แท้จริงต่างจากความสุขชั่วคราวที่ได้จากสิ่งภายนอก การฝึกจิตจึงไม่ใช่เรื่องของการบังคับ แต่เป็นการเข้าใจและสร้างความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีระหว่างจิตและตัวเรา สุดท้ายผู้ที่ควบคุมจิตใจได้ดีจะสามารถหลุดพ้นจากบ่วงพันธนาการต่างๆ ที่คอยยึดเหนี่ยวใจให้ทุกข์ทรมาน เปรียบเสมือนการพ้นจากบ่วงมาร เป็นจุดหมายสูงสุดของการปฏิบัติธรรมซึ่งทุกคนสามารถเข้าถึงได้ด้วยการฝึกฝนและความอดทนอย่างสม่ำเสมอ หากใครสนใจ สามารถเริ่มต้นง่ายๆ ด้วยการทำสมาธิและฝึกสติในชีวิตประจำวัน เช่น การนำเทคนิคหายใจเข้า-ออกเข้ามาช่วยสร้างสมาธิ นั่งพักและตั้งสติเมื่อตัวเองรู้สึกอ่อนล้าหรือฟุ้งซ่าน เทคนิคเหล่านี้จะช่วยให้จิตใจค่อยๆ กลับมาอยู่ในคลองกุศล นำไปสู่ชีวิตที่สงบและพ้นทุกข์ตามแนวทางพระพุทธศาสนาอย่างแท้จริง
