Trick for dividing any number with 5 # mathtrick84

2025/1/18 Edited to

... Read moreYou know how sometimes math can feel like a real puzzle? I used to dread dividing numbers by 5, especially when I couldn't quickly see the answer in my head. It felt like I was always reaching for a calculator, even for what seemed like simple problems. But then, I stumbled upon this super cool math trick that completely revolutionized how I 'divide by 5'! It's so simple, anyone can master it, and it makes mental math a breeze. Here's the secret: when you need to divide any number by 5, instead of doing traditional long division, you simply double the number first, and then move the decimal point one place to the left. That’s it! Seriously, it’s a game-changer. Let's walk through some examples together, just like I learned to do. Say you want to figure out 25 divided by 5: Double 25: 25 x 2 = 50 Move the decimal point one place to the left: 5.0. So, 25 ÷ 5 = 5. Easy, right? What about a bigger number, like 1300 divided by 5? Double 1300: 1300 x 2 = 2600 Move the decimal point one place to the left: 260.0. Voila! 1300 ÷ 5 = 260. Imagine doing that in your head! Even numbers that don't end in 0 or 5 work perfectly. For example, the OCR image shows how to tackle 213 ÷ 5: Double 213: 213 x 2 = 426 Move the decimal point one place to the left: 42.6. So, 213 ÷ 5 = 42.6. No more complicated long division! What if it's a small number like 3 divided by 5? Double 3: 3 x 2 = 6 Move the decimal point one place to the left: 0.6. Yep, 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6. It works every time! This trick is incredibly versatile. You can apply it to other numbers like 95 divided by 5: Double 95: 95 x 2 = 190 Move decimal: 19.0. So, 95 ÷ 5 = 19. And for 800 divided by 5: Double 800: 800 x 2 = 1600 Move decimal: 160.0. So, 800 ÷ 5 = 160. Even 630 divided by 5: Double 630: 630 x 2 = 1260 Move decimal: 126.0. So, 630 ÷ 5 = 126. What about negative numbers? This trick still applies! Just remember that a negative number divided by a positive number results in a negative answer. For instance, -35 divided by 5: Double 35 (ignore the negative for a moment): 35 x 2 = 70 Move decimal: 7.0 Add the negative back: -7. So, -35 ÷ 5 = -7. Similarly for -75 divided by 5: Double 75: 75 x 2 = 150 Move decimal: 15.0 Add the negative back: -15. So, -75 ÷ 5 = -15. The reason this trick works so beautifully is rooted in fractions. Dividing by 5 is the same as multiplying by 1/5. And 1/5 is equivalent to 2/10. So, when you double the number (multiply by 2) and then move the decimal one place to the left (divide by 10), you're essentially multiplying by 2/10, which simplifies to 1/5! Mind blown, right? I’ve found this simple math hack incredibly useful for everyday calculations, from splitting bills with friends to quickly checking answers in homework. It really boosts my confidence in mental arithmetic. Give it a try yourself with other numbers like 30, 150, or even more complex ones. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can master dividing numbers by 5!
