The You/Me Game: “Just Right” for ALL Learners

My favorite types of routines are those that provide a structure and can be adjusted for any age group, demographic, or learning style. The You/Me game is just that!!

This routine can be used as early as prek to start making comparisons and categorizations. You can use it for any type of computation as well. So if one group of students is working on early addition while others are beginning to multiply, this routine can do it all!

Oftentimes, students will start to recognize patterns and begin to predict what comes next but cannot describe what is happening. Generalizing a rule is HARD! This routine doesn't just promote computation: it challenges students to make connections, build on ideas, and test conjectures.

To learn more about the You/Me Game and others like it, click my Link to check out ReimaginED's BURST series. They do not disappoint!

... Read moreThe You/Me Game is a versatile and engaging routine that truly adapts to the needs of all learners, whether they are in PreK or later elementary grades. By inviting students to pick numbers and apply a rule — such as doubling and subtracting, adding a fixed number, or combining operations — this activity sparks both computational skills and deeper reasoning. As students engage, they often begin to notice patterns and predict future results, which is a key step toward mathematical generalization. However, the real challenge lies in articulating the underlying rule, a complex skill that pushes learners to explain their thinking rather than rely on memorization. This makes the You/Me Game not just a fun brain teaser but an effective way to build mathematical discourse and critical thinking. Moreover, the ability to customize the rule according to student level ensures that all learners remain challenged “just right.” For instance, a PreK group might focus on simple addition or doubles, while older students can explore multiplication, fractions, or combined operations. This flexibility supports differentiated instruction and encourages inclusivity in mixed-ability classrooms. The game also emphasizes the formation of conjectures and reasoning about mathematical relationships, fostering higher-order thinking skills. By repeatedly engaging with this routine, students develop a habit of seeking patterns, testing ideas, and generalizing concepts — essential for mathematical fluency. Educators looking to implement this can also explore the BURST series from ReimaginED Teaching, which offers short, 10-15 minute routines designed to increase classroom engagement and promote rich mathematical discourse. The You/Me Game is featured there, alongside other activities that support reasoning and pattern recognition. In practice, educators have successfully used this routine to improve student participation and understanding. By turning math into a collaborative puzzle, students become motivated learners who enjoy discovering the 'why' behind the numbers rather than passive rule followers. It’s a perfect example of how a simple, adaptable routine can transform math learning for diverse student groups.
