Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is spread easily through surfaces contaminated with the virus, so disinfecting is crucial, especially in public places like grocery stores. From my experience as a dermatology nurse, Lysol and many similar disinfectants are effective at killing the virus, but only if used correctly. It's important to follow the instructions on the label carefully; usually, the surface needs to stay wet with the disinfectant for several minutes to ensure the virus is fully eliminated. I recommend carrying disinfectant wipes or sprays when you go out. Wiping down handles of shopping carts, door handles, and other touched surfaces can significantly reduce your risk. This practice not only helps protect children, who are more susceptible to HFMD, but also adults who come in contact with these surfaces. Moreover, hand hygiene complements surface disinfection. Washing your hands thoroughly after touching public surfaces or before eating is just as important. Combining both habits creates a strong defense against spreading or catching HFMD.
