Silicones Are BAD For Your Hair 🚩🚩🚩

The irony of telling consumers that silicones are bad for your hair when they’ll bleach and dye people’s hair and use hot tools without question.

Silicones ARE NOT bad and do not stop moisture absorption. Most modern formulations have lightweight silicones and humectants in them.

Drugstore hair care products are not bad.

The professional hair industries anti-drugstore hair care is the same as estheticians being anti-drugstore skincare.

Note: this video is not disagreeing or debunking abbey, it’s an agreement + further explaining.

... Read morePersonally, I used to avoid hair products with silicones because of all the warnings I heard about them coating the hair and blocking moisture. However, after trying a few lightweight silicone-containing conditioners and serums, I noticed my hair felt smoother and more manageable without the heaviness I feared. It turns out that silicones create a breathable coating that helps lock in moisture rather than prevent it from being absorbed. Many formulations now combine silicones with humectants, which actively draw moisture into the hair shaft. One common misconception is that silicones should be avoided entirely if you use heat styling tools or bleach your hair. But in reality, silicones can actually protect hair from heat damage by forming a shield and reducing friction. Of course, proper cleansing with a gentle shampoo is important to prevent buildup over time, but this doesn’t mean silicones themselves are harmful. Also, I’ve noticed a bias against drugstore hair care products just because they use silicones, while salon professionals sometimes unfairly promote pricier lines. This reminds me of how estheticians sometimes dismiss drugstore skincare unfairly. In my experience, many affordable products offer great benefits and ingredients that mimic professional-grade results. Understanding the science behind silicones helped me make informed product choices without fearing misconceptions. It’s key to focus on the formulation as a whole rather than demonizing an ingredient. This approach has helped me maintain healthy, silky hair without unnecessary restrictions or confusion.

3 hair care swaps for healthy + shiny hair ⬇️ 1. Do not swap out or avoid shampoos/other hair care products that have silicones. Silicones aren’t entirely bad for the hair, they can actually provide shine and smoothness to the hair. They provide a glossy barrier to the hair and help tame frizz.
