COMMON MYTH: deeper skin tones don’t need sunscreen

1. Protection from UV Radiation: While melanin provides some natural protection against UV radiation, it is not sufficient to prevent damage entirely. UV radiation can cause skin damage, including sunburn, in people of all skin tones.

2. Hyperpigmentation: melanated skin is more prone to hyperpigmentation, which can be exacerbated by UV exposure. Using sunscreen can help prevent dark spots and uneven skin tone, as well as prevent existing pigment from worsening.

3. Anti-Aging Benefits: UV radiation contributes to premature aging, including wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity. Sunscreen helps to protect against these signs of aging.

... Read moreAs someone who has always thought that my darker skin tone protected me enough from the sun, I was surprised to learn how crucial daily sunscreen use is, even for melanated skin. Melanin does provide some natural defense, but it's not enough to prevent the harmful effects of prolonged UV exposure. Personally, I noticed that without sunscreen, my skin was more prone to developing dark spots and uneven patches, known as hyperpigmentation, especially after spending time outdoors. In incorporating sunscreen into my routine, I opted for lightweight, mattifying formulas like Murad Skincare's mattifying sunscreen and La Roche-Posay's Anthelios, which blend well without leaving a white cast. I also tried Supergoop's unseen sunscreen, which is a great option for those seeking a clear, invisible barrier. Another factor I experienced is that UV rays contribute to premature aging. Over time, I observed increased fine lines and less firmness, which sunscreen helped mitigate by protecting my skin's elasticity. It's essential to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you are outdoors often. By embracing sunscreen tailored for deeper skin tones, I have seen an improvement in my skin's overall health. It minimizes the risk of sun damage and hyperpigmentation flare-ups, maintaining a more even tone and youthful appearance. Sunscreen is truly a vital skincare step for everyone, regardless of your complexion, and investing time in finding the right product makes a significant difference.
