What is sun poisoning?
Sun burns and sun poisoning are virtually the same thing. Both of them occur when you’ve had prolonged exposure to UV rays resulting in a burn. The difference is what is accompanied by that burn.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it may be sun poisoning and you should go to the hospital immediately to lower your chances of further complications.
1. Nausea/vomiting
2. Fever/chills
3. Headaches
4. Dizziness
5. Dehydration
6. Confusion
7. Rapid pulse
Whether you believe the sun is healthy or not, there is a limit to where you put yourself at risk for major health complications.

From personal experience working alongside dermatology professionals, I’ve seen sun poisoning often mistaken for a severe sunburn, which can delay necessary treatment. Unlike regular sunburns that primarily cause skin redness and pain, sun poisoning includes systemic symptoms such as nausea, chills, headaches, dizziness, dehydration, confusion, and a rapid pulse—all signs that the body is reacting dangerously to prolonged UV exposure. One case I recall was a patient who had been on a beach vacation in Australia, notorious for its intense UV rays due to ozone layer thinning. They initially brushed off their symptoms as typical sunburn discomfort but later developed blisters and worsening nausea. They went to the hospital only after confusion and rapid pulse set in, which are severe warning signs of sun poisoning. This underscores the importance of not ignoring these symptoms and recognizing when sun exposure has gone beyond simple burns. Prevention is key—adequate sun protection like broad-spectrum sunscreen, protective clothing, and limiting direct sun exposure during peak hours can dramatically reduce risks. Hydration also plays a crucial role in avoiding dehydration, which can worsen symptoms. If you notice any accompanying symptoms like those listed, immediate medical attention is essential to lower the risk of complications such as infections or heatstroke. Understanding the distinction between sunburn and sun poisoning helps in managing your health safely while enjoying the sun. If you or someone you know experiences these concerning symptoms after sun exposure, don’t hesitate to seek hospital care promptly.
