Perhaps it was the sheer scope, or simply that I connected slightly less deeply with the individual journey compared to Elsinore or Leni's. Further down my list is The Nightingale. Now, don't get me wrong, this is a widely acclaimed and beautiful book about two sisters in Nazi-occupied France. Its story of courage and sisterhood is undeniable, and I found myself engrossed in their individual paths of resistance. However, when comparing it to Hannah's other works, I felt a slight disconnect. As the OCR notes mentioned, for me, it lacked character connection in the same profound way that The Four Winds or The Great Alone did. It was a fine read, but it didn't leave me utterly devastated and thinking about it for weeks afterward. So, if you're asking, "What are the best Kristin Hannah books?" or "Where should I start with her novels?", I'd genuinely recommend diving into either The Four Winds or The Great Alone first if you're looking for an intense, character-driven story with significant historical depth and high emotional impact.
