🐻 Bear Encounter In Kananaskis Goes Viral.
Remember on Friday when we told you about the bear warning in Kananaskis near Mount Engadine after a grizzly approached a hiker?
Video of that encounter has now exploded online, racking up more than 30 million views.
The footage shows a woman walking her leashed dog when the grizzly repeatedly bluff-charged to within just a few feet of them.
She wasn't carrying bear spray, but managed to stay calm before escaping safely back to camp.
A sobering reminder that even a quick walk can become a bear encounter.
Having spent a lot of time hiking in bear country myself, this video is a powerful reminder of how unpredictable and close encounters with wildlife can be. Even with a leashed dog, you’re never completely safe from a grizzly’s bluff charge, which is often used to intimidate rather than attack. Staying calm is critical—running or panicking can provoke a real attack. While this woman didn’t have bear spray on her, it’s something I always carry and highly recommend for anyone hiking in grizzly territory. Bear spray can deter an aggressive bear if needed and is far more effective than noise alone. Another important tip is to make noise regularly while hiking to avoid surprising a bear. Talking loudly or carrying a bear bell helps reduce sudden encounters. Also, be extra cautious near water sources or dense vegetation where bears might be feeding or resting. This incident near Mount Engadine highlights that bear encounters can happen anywhere, even on what seems to be a brief walk. From my personal experience, always plan your hike with bear safety in mind. Know how to identify bear signs like tracks or scat, keep your dog close, and never approach if you spot a bear. Inform someone of your route and estimated return. Watching this viral video reinforces how respect and preparedness for wildlife encounters are essential, no matter how familiar the area feels.
