For most people, it’s exciting. And it is. But today also meant saying goodbye to the only home I’ve ever known. The home where I grew up, where so many memories were made, and where life changed in ways I never imagined.
When we were looking for a home, we weren’t chasing the biggest house or the nicest neighbourhood. We wanted something that felt right for us, something we could comfortably afford, grow into, and build a life in together. A home that gave us peace.
As bittersweet as today was, it brought me so much comfort knowing this home was chosen with family in mind too. Mama Mel isn’t moving in with us yet. She’s staying in my childhood home because she’s still the strong, independent, resilient woman she’s always been. And when she’s ready, this home will be waiting for her (a high ranch bungalow).
The moment that broke me today was when she opened a fortune cookie after we got the keys. It read:
“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
I don’t know if I’ve ever read a fortune that felt so meant to be.
This home is the start of our next chapter as husband and wife. But no matter where life takes me, a part of my heart will always live in my childhood home with the woman who taught me what home really means. Here’s to new beginnings, without ever forgetting where they began. 🤍
