... Read moreAfter showing off my go-to supplies, you might be thinking, "Okay, but how do I start my own junk journal?" Or "What kinds of notebooks are best?" I totally get it! I've been there, staring at a blank page (or a stack of cool papers) and wondering where to begin. It's all about making your journal uniquely yours, and creating those aesthetic pages doesn't have to be complicated.
For me, the foundation of any good junk journal is the right notebook. While some people love repurposing old books, I often reach for a simple dotted notebook or a sturdy spiral-bound one. They give me freedom without strict lines, letting me glue in all sorts of ephemera and cutouts. I’ve even decorated a clear-covered notebook with stickers and magazine cutouts to make it truly mine! You can also find beautiful junk journal books specifically designed for this purpose, or just use plain cardstock bound together. The type of notebook really sets the tone for your creative journey.
One of the best parts about junk journaling is that you don't need to buy everything new. I love making my own 'journal things at home'! Old magazines (fashion, outdoor themes – whatever catches your eye!) are goldmines for interesting images, words, and textures. I spend hours cutting out cool graphics or inspiring quotes. Don't forget patterned wrapping paper or even colorful origami paper for backgrounds and pockets. And those postcards and decorative labels I've collected from my travels? They instantly add a personal, vintage touch. It's all about gathering unique bits and bobs to create a rich collage, making it an interactive journal experience.
Beyond the paper, having a few key tools makes a huge difference. Good quality glue sticks are non-negotiable for sticking down all those layers, and a glue tape dispenser is super handy for quick additions. Of course, a variety of washi tapes can transform a simple page, adding color or a border. And stickers! From cute frog designs to elegant clear decorative stickers, they’re my secret weapon for adding personality without much effort. My black micro-tip pens are perfect for writing, while colorful highlighters and colored pencils add little pops of color and emphasis. I even use a portable photo printer to add instant memories directly into my journal, making it truly interactive.
If you're ever stuck on what to create, think about themes! I've experimented with a 'Bookshelf' themed spread, decorating miniature book covers, and a 'Daisy & Leo' spread filled with my dog's photos and paw prints – it makes the journaling process so much more personal and fun. Aesthetic journaling isn't just about making things look pretty; it's about telling your story. You can make an 'at home' journal focusing on daily routines, gratitude, or even a 'self-love journal' celebrating your achievements. When I'm bored, I love to brainstorm journal ideas like a dream journal, a goals tracker, or even just a space for random thoughts and doodles. The key is to just start and let your creativity flow. There are no rules in junk journaling, only endless possibilities!
Lastly, keeping all these wonderful bits and bobs organized can be a challenge. I don't have a fancy 'junk journal organiser,' but I use clear bags for cutouts and ephemera, and a small tin for my pens and pencils. It helps keep everything accessible and inspires me when I see all my treasures ready to be used.
I have so much to add to my journal I’ve been collecting but don’t have the time!!
