late night hand study

Trying to boost my skill level! Hands seem a bit easier now and all it took was a 20 minute video! #storytime #lemon8contest

2024/7/20 Edited to

... Read moreWho else has found themselves burning the midnight oil, trying to level up their art skills? Lately, my focus has been on mastering hands – they're notoriously tough, right? But I've discovered that late-night study sessions, coupled with a smart approach to notes, can be an absolute game-changer. Here’s how I turned my struggle into progress, especially after stumbling upon a fantastic 20-minute video that really demystified things! First off, why late night? For me, it's the quiet. No distractions, just me, my sketchbook, and my pencils. This calm environment is perfect for deep focus, allowing me to truly absorb drawing techniques without interruption. My 'late night studying notes' aren't just about writing things down; they're about active sketching and quick annotations. I start by sketching hands in various poses, focusing on the overall shape before diving into details. This initial block-in is crucial. One of the biggest breakthroughs came from understanding 'Fingerstyles'. Instead of meticulously drawing each joint, I learned to simplify the finger structure into basic cylindrical or rectangular forms first. Then, I add the nuanced curves and knuckle details. My notes are filled with little diagrams showing how different fingerstyles behave when a hand is open, closed, or grasping something. This simple shift made my pencil drawings of hands look so much more natural and less stiff. Another key aspect of my art study notes is jotting down quick 'TIPS' as I go. For instance, a common tip is to always think of the palm as a solid, almost brick-like shape, and the thumb as a separate, highly mobile unit. I also make notes on effective foreshortening – how to make fingers appear to recede or come forward convincingly. These aren't long paragraphs; they're usually bullet points or tiny sketches next to a hand drawing illustrating the point. I even draw little arrows to show the direction of force or movement in different drawing techniques. I found it incredibly practical to dedicate specific sessions to different aspects. One night might be purely about the back of the hand, focusing on tendons and proportions. Another night, I'll tackle the palm, paying attention to the fleshy pads and creases. The 20-minute video I mentioned earlier was a goldmine for breaking down complex anatomy into digestible parts, showing me how to approach various poses with confidence. My notes from that video are probably the most valuable – quick sketches of bone structures and muscle groups, simplified into forms I can easily remember and replicate. Finally, don't underestimate the power of review. Before starting a new late-night session, I flip back through my previous 'late night studying notes'. This reinforces what I've learned and helps me identify areas where I still need practice. It's not just about spending hours drawing; it's about drawing smart and making your study time count. If you're looking to boost your skill level like I was, try incorporating these active note-taking and focused study methods into your own late-night art sessions. You might be surprised how quickly hands start to feel a bit easier!
