Things I’ve Learned As A First Time Mom

Breastfeeding was such a scary, overwhelming thing for me while I was pregnant. I went into my pregnancy thinking I was going to exclusively pump but fell in love with breastfeeding. The bond you build with your child is like nothing else and I feel so blessed to have made it to 10 months basically exclusively breastfeeding!

What are some facts you’ve learned about breastfeeding? Did any of them surprise you?

... Read moreBreastfeeding is often more challenging than expected, yet it brings an unparalleled bond with your child. Many first-time moms might feel overwhelmed, fearing they won't be able to produce enough milk or navigate the intricacies of breastfeeding. One key surprise is that your breastmilk adapts to your baby's needs, reflecting their health and nutrition. For instance, when a baby is sick, the milk can take on a different color and composition to better support their recovery. Additionally, it’s essential to understand the energy demands of breastfeeding. Producing milk can use up to 25% of your daily energy, which is significant, especially for new mothers who may already feel fatigued. Remember, if all you accomplished in a day was to feed your baby, that is enough—cherish those moments and ensure you allow yourself time to rest and rejuvenate. Many first-time mothers also benefit from nipple creams to ease discomfort; it's a lifesaver for many. Brands like Earth Mama offer great options to help your skin heal and keep you comfortable. Overall, remember that each mother and baby’s journey is unique, filled with its own challenges and joys. Support from fellow moms and sharing experiences can make a huge difference!
