what I’ve learned about breastfeeding & pumping as a first time mom

this has been a lot of trial & error for me, but here’s what actually makes a difference:

• hydration is EVERYTHING

• eating enough matters more than I thought

• consistency > everything else

• if supply dips, add more demand (more nursing/pumping)

• breastfeeding + pumping after helps signal your body

• using a haakaa more often helped me collect extra

• stress & exhaustion affect supply more than people talk about

• my morning pumps are always my best

also when I actually take care of myself, my body shows up for me

still figuring it out, but this is what’s been working for me

... Read moreThrough my personal experience with breastfeeding and pumping, I realized that staying well-hydrated is absolutely critical. Not just water, but electrolytes too—when I neglected this, my milk supply noticeably dropped. I also learned that eating enough, including frequent snacks, is essential because your body needs more fuel than you might expect during this demanding period. One thing that was a game-changer for me was sticking to a consistent pumping schedule—pumping every 2-3 hours made a huge difference. If I skipped sessions, my supply would quickly decline, which underscored how consistency is truly more important than anything else in maintaining supply. When I noticed my supply dipping, I increased the frequency of nursing and pumping to send stronger signals to my body. I also found that combining breastfeeding with pumping afterward helped boost my milk production. Utilizing a Haakaa suction pump was invaluable for collecting extra milk effortlessly. Stress and exhaustion had a more significant impact on my supply than I had anticipated; taking time for self-care helped my body keep up with the demands. Another interesting discovery was that my morning pumps were always my most productive, likely due to hormonal fluctuations. Throughout this journey, being patient with myself and continuously learning what my body needed made all the difference. For moms starting out, I’d recommend listening to your body’s signals, maintaining hydration and nutrition, and prioritizing consistency to support a successful breastfeeding and pumping experience.
