Final night in Tulum, I did NOT post as much as I thought I would hahaha

... Read moreOkay, so many of you have been curious about my experience as a Black traveler in Tulum, and how it stacks up against places like Ibiza. I get it – when you're planning a trip, you want to know what the real vibe is like, beyond the curated Instagram feeds! My final night in Tulum really got me reflecting on the whole journey. I didn't post as much as I thought I would because I was genuinely soaking it all in, living in the moment, and disconnecting. But now I'm ready to spill the tea! First off, the energy in Tulum is truly something special. As a Black woman, I felt incredibly welcomed and at ease. There's a beautiful mix of people from all over the world, and I found the locals to be warm and respectful. I never once felt out of place or singled out. The Afro-Caribbean influence is subtle but present in the music, the food, and even some of the local art, which was a pleasant surprise. Safety is always a big consideration, and honestly, I felt quite safe. Of course, like any travel destination, common sense applies: be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and don't flash valuables. I stuck to well-lit areas and used reputable transport services. I highly recommend researching areas beforehand if you plan to venture off the main strip. Now, for the comparison with Ibiza! This is where things get interesting. Ibiza, for me, was all about high-energy clubbing, world-renowned DJs, and a very distinct, almost frantic party scene. It's fantastic if that's what you're looking for – massive crowds, big-name venues, and a non-stop party rhythm. As a Black traveler there, I focused on the music and dancing, which was an amazing experience in itself. Tulum, on the other hand, offers a more laid-back, bohemian, and spiritual party scene. Think jungle parties, beach clubs with live DJs, and a focus on wellness and natural beauty during the day, transitioning into chic, intimate gatherings at night. It's less about the super clubs and more about the unique, earthy atmosphere. If you're looking for a place where you can dance under the stars, connect with nature, and still enjoy fantastic music, Tulum wins. The fashion is more relaxed, too – think linen, natural fabrics, and less 'dress to impress' than Ibiza. From a Black perspective, both offer great experiences, but Tulum felt more grounding and culturally immersive, whereas Ibiza was pure, unadulterated party escapism. For anyone considering Tulum, I'd say embrace the eco-chic vibe. Explore the cenotes, visit the Mayan ruins, and definitely indulge in the incredible Yucatan cuisine. Don't be afraid to try street food! My personal recommendations include checking out the beach zone for stunning scenery, and exploring the pueblo for a more authentic local feel. The people you meet are often just as interesting as the destination itself, so be open to conversations. Overall, Tulum offered a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and vibrant culture that truly resonated with me. It was a different kind of magic compared to Ibiza, but equally unforgettable. I hope this gives you a clearer picture for your own travel plans!
