Busywork

Busywork is activity that looks spiritual, feels responsible, and sounds productive, but it slowly pulls us away from intimacy with God. Not everything that keeps you busy is sent by God, and not everything that is good is God's will for you.

These tasks—while appearing meaningful—can quietly distance us from the heart of our faith, which is intimacy with God rather than mere activity. For instance, spending hours on religious routines without openness or reflection may look like devotion but can become a barrier to genuine spiritual growth. One helpful approach I found is to regularly pause and ask whether an activity is leading me closer to God or simply filling time. Not everything labeled 'good' or 'spiritual' is necessarily God's specific will for us at the moment. This discernment requires honest self-reflection and prayer, seeking God's guidance to prioritize what truly nurtures our inner life. Additionally, embracing stillness and moments of quiet prayer has been transformative. These often seem like 'doing nothing,' but they create space for God’s presence to be deeply experienced. By intentionally reducing busywork, I discovered a more authentic spiritual rhythm that is less about constant action and more about connection. Remember, the goal is not just to be busy with religious tasks but to cultivate a heartfelt relationship with God. This balance between action and intimacy is key to avoiding the trap of busywork. Prioritizing what genuinely aligns with God's will can bring peace, purpose, and deeper fulfillment in your spiritual walk.
