Notes from Deep Work - Productivity ✨

1. “If you don’t produce, you won’t thrive”. - This means if all you do is consume content, train, study and never use or practice your knowledge - you’ll feel behind. As a recovering perfectionist this is a reminder I need to take action to actually achieve my goals.

2. “We who cut mere stones must always be envisioning cathedrals” - This quote is actually from The Pragmatic Programer, but is in this book. This phrase means to always think bigger but also to perfect your craft. Even if what you’re doing is mundane, when you’re hyper focused on your goal and getting good - you’ll find success.

3. To avoid an “open ended slog” Newport tells us to organize our “raw materials..to minimize energy-dissipating friction”. - Setup everything you need for a task beforehand. It reduces procrastination if you know exactly what you have to do AND have all your resources in front of you.

4. “Define the specific next-step question..” -If you have a big task or need to concentrate for a while, make sure you know what milestones to hit. We can end up in a loop where we aren’t making progress because we don’t know where we are headed. Make sure you know what results or inputs you want to give to a project so you aren’t doing busywork.

These are some things I highlighted in the book but there is so much more. I didn’t want to read it at first because the topic seemed obvious and boring.

I was pleasantly surprised and it’s one of the better non-fiction “self helpy” things I’ve read.

That being said, a lot of people said this book was jargon and overthinking combined so take that as you will. 😂

The original notes I shared were just the tip of the iceberg, and I wanted to expand on how I've personally applied these rules for focused success in a distracted world to my own routine, especially when it comes to studying and getting things done. One of the biggest shifts for me was truly internalizing the idea of "producing, not just consuming." Before, I'd spend hours reading articles or watching tutorials, feeling productive, but never actually doing anything with that knowledge. Now, after a study session, I immediately try to create something – whether it's summarizing notes in my own words, attempting practice problems, or even explaining a concept to an imaginary audience. This active engagement has been a game-changer for my cal newport study approach, turning passive learning into tangible output, which is what deep work productivity is all about. The quote about "envisioning cathedrals" resonates so deeply. It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day grind, especially with repetitive tasks. But by constantly reminding myself of the bigger picture – my long-term academic goals, career aspirations, or even just the joy of mastering a complex subject – I find a renewed sense of purpose. This helps me approach even the most mundane parts of my deep work focus time productivity with a higher level of intensity and precision. It’s like, even if I’m just tidying up my digital files, I’m doing it with the vision of a perfectly organized 'cathedral' of knowledge in mind! Building on the idea of organizing "raw materials to minimize energy-dissipating friction," I've started implementing a pre-deep work ritual. Before I sit down for a focused session, I make sure my water bottle is full, my phone is on silent and out of reach, and all necessary tabs are open (and unnecessary ones closed). I also use a simple task list to clearly state what I need to accomplish. This setup ritual, which I learned from deep work book notes, means I don't waste precious deep work focus time productivity wondering what to do next or getting distracted by minor inconveniences. And speaking of what to do next, defining "specific next-step questions" has revolutionized how I tackle large projects. Instead of vaguely thinking, "I need to work on my essay," I now break it down: "Research three academic sources for section two," or "Write the introduction paragraph outline." This granular approach, a core deep work productivity principle, avoids that feeling of being overwhelmed and ensures consistent progress. It's so much easier to commit to 30 minutes of deep work when you know exactly what the next single step is. I also found immense value in Newport's concept of scheduling deep work. Instead of hoping for focus to magically appear, I now block out specific times in my calendar for deep work notes and tasks. Treating these blocks as non-negotiable appointments has significantly increased my deep work productivity. During these times, I completely disconnect. It’s challenging at first, but the results are undeniable. Finally, while the original article didn't mention it, Newport also talks about the importance of strategically embracing boredom and digital minimalism to train your brain for deeper focus. I've personally experimented with taking walks without my phone or consciously limiting social media checks. It’s tough, but it helps my brain resist the urge for constant stimulation, making those deep work focus time productivity sessions even more effective. These aren't just cal newport deep work productivity theories; they are actionable strategies that have genuinely improved my ability to concentrate and excel.
