Yes, being deconditioned can absolutely make your POTS symptoms worse, amplifying that excessive increase in heart rate when standing, but it doesn't cause the underlying condition. It's a consequence, not a trigger. This distinction is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. I've heard countless stories, and experienced some myself, where patients are dismissed or told they simply need to get fitter. This kind of advice not only delays appropriate care but also places an immense emotional burden on individuals already struggling with a debilitating chronic illness. It can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, and severe frustration, making the journey to diagnosis and management even harder. That's why I feel so strongly about debunking this myth. It's not just about correcting medical information; it's about validating the experiences of so many people living with POTS. Instead, we need to focus on what does actually trigger or is associated with POTS. As I highlighted, there are many legitimate causes. Think about infections, for instance. We've seen a significant rise in POTS cases following viral infections, notably COVID-19. The way these infections can disrupt the autonomic nervous system is a well-documented area of research. Or consider trauma, whether it's a physical trauma like a car accident or a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which can profoundly impact neurological function. Many of us also deal with connective tissue disorders or autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which are frequently co-morbid with POTS. These conditions involve systemic issues that can directly affect the cardiovascular and nervous systems. And let's not forget the role of mast cell activation disorders or even the impact of surgery on the body's delicate balance. These are the areas where research and clinical focus should be, not on blaming patients for being 'deconditioned.' My point in sharing all of this, and being so vocal about it, is to empower you. If you or someone you know is struggling with POTS, advocate for yourself. Seek out healthcare professionals who understand the complexities of autonomic dysfunction and who are willing to look beyond simplistic explanations.
