My parents have been bringing me to the podiatrist since I was a very small child for my pain, flat feet. I still go to the podiatrist for my painful, flat feet. I cannot be on my feet for very long due to my foot pain. But, I’m just now incidentally learning I have accessory navicular bones in my feet…. Why does this happen? 🤦‍♀️ And maybe the treatment wouldn’t have been different, but I still would have liked to know about this. So, I could know about ALL of my options! 😭#greenscreen

2025/9/30 Edited to

... Read moreDiscovering you have accessory navicular bones later in life, especially after years of unexplained pain, can be incredibly frustrating. It’s like a puzzle piece finally clicking into place, but also prompts a cascade of questions: Why now? What does this mean? And most importantly, what can really be done beyond the usual orthotics? Living with chronic foot pain, particularly from flat feet compounded by an accessory navicular, means more than just discomfort. It impacts your daily life, your ability to stay active, and often, your overall mood. I totally get the feeling of being dismissed or told, “Oh, it’s just flat feet,” when deep down you know it’s so much more. This condition, where you have an extra bone within the posterior tibial tendon, can cause constant irritation and inflammation, leading to persistent pain, especially where the tendon attaches to the navicular bone. The OCR even highlighted how "ill-fitting shoes, flat feet, foot/ankle sprains, or athletic overuse may cause accessory navicular syndrome," which often resonates with those of us who’ve been active or struggled with footwear. So, if you’re like me, wondering what else can be done, let’s explore some options beyond just custom inserts. Physical therapy is often a game-changer. A good physical therapist can help strengthen the muscles supporting your arch, improve ankle stability, and reduce the strain on your posterior tibial tendon. They might introduce specific stretches to improve flexibility and reduce tightness, which can be critical when your foot architecture is causing direct pressure points. Sometimes, simply resting and using ice can help manage acute inflammation, but for chronic issues, a more structured approach is needed. Another crucial aspect is self-advocacy. If you feel your concerns aren't being heard, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion. Ask your doctor about specific imaging tests, like an MRI, which can often reveal soft tissue issues and the presence of an accessory navicular bone more clearly than a standard X-ray. It’s vital to communicate the intensity and location of your pain. Remember, "nobody ever looked into this" is a common sentiment for those of us with late diagnoses, but it doesn't have to be the end of the story. You have the right to understand your body fully and explore every possible treatment path. For managing the pain day-to-day, consider footwear choices carefully. Beyond just inserts, look for shoes with good arch support, ample cushioning, and a wide toe box to avoid unnecessary pressure. Avoiding prolonged standing or high-impact activities when your feet are particularly inflamed can also help. Some people find relief with anti-inflammatory medications or even cortisone injections in severe cases. In rare instances, if conservative treatments consistently fail and the pain significantly impacts your quality of life, surgery to remove the accessory navicular bone or repair the posterior tibial tendon might be an option. While it sounds daunting, for some, it provides lasting relief. Finding out about this condition, even at 36, has been a journey of validation and new possibilities. It's empowering to finally understand why my feet hurt the way they do and to know there are more steps I can take. If you're struggling with similar painful flat feet symptoms, don't give up on finding your answers. Your body deserves to be understood, and with the right knowledge and advocacy, you can find ways to manage the pain and improve your quality of life.
