Read moreLiving with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) means everyday activities like showering can become challenging due to symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, and rapid heart rate. As someone who experiences these symptoms, I’ve found that implementing specific strategies during shower time helps reduce flare-ups and keeps me safer. Firstly, avoiding hot water is critical. Heat causes blood vessels near the skin to dilate, leading to more blood pooling away from the brain, which exacerbates POTS symptoms. Using lukewarm or cool water helps maintain blood flow and reduces the risk of fainting. I also keep an ice pack or cold compress nearby to cool down if I start feeling overheated. Sitting down during showers has been a game-changer for me. Standing increases heart rate and orthostatic stress, so using a shower chair or simply sitting on the shower floor can prevent symptom spikes. If you don’t have a shower chair, a sturdy stool or even sitting on the edge of the tub works well. Just remember to stand up slowly and engage your leg muscles when done. Hydration is another key factor. Before, during, and after showering, I drink water with electrolytes to keep my body balanced. Electrolytes help retain fluids and support blood volume, which minimizes symptoms. Coconut water or electrolyte packets work great, but it’s important not to overload—small amounts spaced out can be more effective. To avoid sudden symptom flare-ups, it’s best to keep shampoo, conditioner, and other shower essentials within easy reach at seated height. Reaching high or bending over can worsen symptoms due to posture changes and added strain on your cardiovascular system. Lastly, rest after your shower is essential. Even if you feel fine immediately after, POTS symptoms can worsen once you stop moving. Sit or lie down for 20-40 minutes afterward to allow your body to recover and prevent sudden dizziness or fainting. These tips have helped me regain independence with showering and improve my quality of life. Sharing what works can empower others with POTS to find manageable solutions and feel less isolated in their experiences.
