CPC Exam Study Tip

For the CPC exam, you'll have 4 hours to answer 100 multiple choice questions. This is about 2 minutes and 40 seconds per question. Many people fail the exam simply because they run out of time.

One of the things you can do to help you pass the exam, is learn test taking techniques. One of the techniques that I recommend is using the process of elimination to help you get the correct answer.

The way I recommend to my students to do this is the following:

*Go directly to the answers first

*Compare similarities and differences

*Go back and read the question

*Then look up the code definitions in the tabular

*Eliminate wrong answers

*Choose the correct answer based on your choices that are left

To learn more about this and to see walk through example videos, and get 210 practice coding questions, you can check out my Exam Strategy Workshop. It is an online mini course geared for people who are getting ready to take the CPC exam.

... Read moreWhen I was preparing for my CPC exam, honestly, it felt like a mountain to climb! There's so much information to learn and so many coding guidelines to internalize. Beyond just knowing the content, figuring out how to study effectively was a huge part of my journey to certification. One of the first things I'd recommend is getting your hands on the official AAPC study guides and practice exams. These are goldmines because they're designed specifically for the exam and help you understand the format and content areas. I found practicing with questions similar to the actual exam was crucial for building my stamina and identifying my weak spots. For instance, I'd often struggle with specific coding sections, so I'd make a note to revisit those chapters in my CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II manuals. Don't just read them; actively apply them to clinical scenarios. Another lifesaver for me was creating flashcards for medical terminology and anatomy. It sounds old-school, but drilling those terms really solidified my foundation. I'd flip through them during my commute or whenever I had a few spare minutes. It’s amazing how much you can retain with consistent, short bursts of review. I also found great value in online resources and forums. Connecting with other medical coding students provided a support system and a place to ask questions. Sometimes hearing how someone else understood a complex coding rule just clicked better for me. There are also many free and paid platforms offering additional practice questions and explanations. Just be sure to vet the quality of non-official materials. For the exam itself, besides knowing the content, mastering test-taking strategies is key. That's where techniques like the Process of Elimination truly shine. I remember encountering questions where I wasn't 100% sure, but by carefully narrowing down your choices and *eliminating obviously incorrect answers*, I often arrived at the right one. It's not about guessing; it's about strategic thinking under pressure. This skill needs practice, too! While studying, I'd intentionally try to explain why each incorrect answer was wrong, not just pick the right one. Finally, don't underestimate the power of consistent review and self-assessment. After going through practice questions, I wouldn't just look at the score. I'd go back and review *every single question*, especially the ones I got wrong or struggled with. Understanding my mistakes was crucial for growth. I also found it helpful to simulate the actual exam conditions – setting a timer and working through practice tests without distractions. This helped me manage my time better and get used to the pace required to answer 100 questions in four hours. It’s all about building confidence and making sure you’re truly ready to tackle that certification!
