As a dog owner, I've come to realize how challenging stormy weather can be for our furry friends, especially breeds like Shih Tzus who tend to get quite anxious during thunder and wind. From my own experience, I’ve found that traditional solutions like thunder jackets don’t always work—my dog Mike really disliked it when I tried it before. Instead, what has proven most effective for us is using a sound machine with multiple sound settings. The white noise or calming sounds help mask the outside storm noises, and usually, Mike is able to relax and even fall asleep quickly when I turn it on. It’s a simple, yet powerful way to create a comforting environment indoors during mild to moderate storms. For more intense storms, when the wind and thunder are particularly strong, supplementary remedies like CBD oil or Rescue Remedy have made a noticeable difference. These natural supplements help soothe his nervous system and often make him drowsy enough to ease the stress of the storm. It’s important, however, to monitor dosage and consult with a vet when adding supplements to your pet’s routine. Sometimes, despite what we try, the anxiety remains. That’s when I might take Mike for a drive in the truck, which surprisingly calms him down even while it’s raining outside. Another quirky behavior I've noticed is that Mike feels secure curled up in places like the kitchen or bathroom sink or bathtub—small enclosed spaces seem to give him a sense of protection during harsh weather. Ultimately, every dog is unique, and finding the right combination of comfort tools and calming aids is a process of trial and error. However, sharing these personal experiences and strategies might provide helpful insights for other pet owners facing similar challenges with their anxious dogs during storms.
