Epilepsy is not rare

2025/2/6 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I recently learned something that truly surprised me and made me want to share some vital information. We often hear about epilepsy, but did you know that epilepsy is not rare at all? In fact, statistics show that a staggering 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point in their lives. This truly opened my eyes to how common it actually is, and why it's so important for all of us to understand it better. One of the questions I often hear is, 'what does a seizure feel like?' While every person's experience can be different, and there are many types of seizures, I can share some common aspects. Some people experience what's called an 'aura' right before a seizure – it could be a strange smell, a feeling of déjà vu, or a tingling sensation. During a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, a person might lose consciousness, fall to the ground, and experience rhythmic jerking movements. It can look scary, but it's important to remember that the person isn't in control. Afterward, there's often a period of confusion, exhaustion, and sometimes a headache. It's a really disorienting experience, both physically and mentally. So, 'what is the sign of epilepsy?' It's not always the dramatic falling and shaking that many people imagine. Signs can vary widely depending on the type of seizure. For some, it might be staring blankly into space for a few seconds (absence seizures), or experiencing brief muscle jerks in one part of the body (myoclonic seizures). Other signs could include sudden changes in mood or behavior, tingling sensations, or even experiencing strange smells or tastes. If you or someone you know is experiencing recurrent, unexplained episodes like these, it's really important to talk to a doctor. Now, let's address a really crucial and often worrying question: 'what happens if you have a seizure alone?' This is a big concern for many. If you live with epilepsy, having a plan is key. Try to make your living space as safe as possible by removing sharp objects or padding corners. If you feel an aura coming on, try to lie down in a safe spot, away from stairs or busy areas. After a seizure alone, it’s vital to get to a safe position, like the recovery position, and rest. If you're able, call someone you trust or emergency services if you're injured or if the seizure lasts longer than usual. Wearing a medical alert bracelet or necklace can also be incredibly helpful, as it provides vital information to first responders. To help spread awareness, here are some quick 'epilepsy fun facts' (or perhaps 'important facts' is a better term!): Epilepsy isn't contagious. Many people with epilepsy live full, active lives. It's not always obvious that someone has epilepsy. There are effective treatments available, including medication and surgery, that help many people control their seizures. Knowing basic first aid for seizures (stay calm, keep them safe, time the seizure) can make a huge difference. I hope sharing this information helps shed light on epilepsy and empowers us all to be more understanding and supportive. Remember, awareness and education are our best tools!

An infographic titled 'Seizure First Aid' details how to help someone having a seizure. It outlines three steps: STAY with the person, Keep them SAFE by moving away from harm, and turn them onto their SIDE. It also lists when to call 911 and what NOT to do, such as restraining or putting objects in their mouth.
Seizure First Aid
Epilepsy is not rare. Generalized Tonic Clonic (grand mal) seizures require attention and we should all know how to keep people safe. First, try not to panic. All seizures are not emergencies but it is never a bad idea to call 911 if you have not experienced this before. The goal is to
