Sint Maarten Do’s & Don’ts to Know Before you Travel
Some of the main tips and tricks I wish I would have know before taking my trip to Sint Maarten, from things I learned to unanswered questions I had before I went.
⛵️ Overall some of my favorite activities I did while I was there that I would highly recommend to anyone going are a sunset cruise, going to baie rouge, and eating out as much as possible (yes all the food is really that good).
❓Some of the questions I had before going that I had a hard time finding answers too related to money, electricity, and getting around. While I did stay on the Dutch side, since the island is so small and acts as one nation the my answers generally work for both sides. Money = generally whatever you got. Pretty much everywhere takes USD and make sure you bring more than you think you need. Electricity= US power system (not the European style plugs and power). And getting around = rent a car. Trust you will save sooo much money and time by doing this.
☕️ For food once again eat out!!! Your on vacation, live a little and enjoy the amazingggg food scene. The food was so good that I even compiled my favorite bites and sips: https://v.lemon8-app.com/s/OgewjTkQQp. Now with that said, don’t expect good iced coffee. They really don’t know how to make an iced latte here (save your money and nap on the beach if you’re tired lol). And ofc you have to try Jonny cakes! Most restaurants and cafes have them and they are an all day food. They are sweet and fluffy and very versatile.
✈️ Some other tips and tricks I have are to 100% wear sun screen everywhere… even the car. I got burnttt in the car. And most “public” restrooms aren’t free and it’s lowkey best to buy a drink at the bar and use their bathroom.
My list of Do’s and Don’ts in my notes goes on and on but these where by part the ones I though where the most important for Saint Martin.
... Read moreTraveling to Sint Maarten truly offers an unforgettable Caribbean experience, but there are a few additional insights I’d love to share from my own time on the island to help make your trip even smoother and more enjoyable.
First, regarding transportation, renting a car is definitely a smart move as it not only saves time but gives you flexibility to explore both the Dutch and French sides of the island with ease. Parking is generally straightforward, but keep an eye on signs in popular areas to avoid fines. If you’re not comfortable driving, rely on local taxis but agree on the fare beforehand as meters aren’t always used.
When it comes to money, while most places accept USD which is very convenient, carrying some smaller cash denominations is helpful for tipping or small purchases. Credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants and stores, but smaller vendors or markets often prefer cash. Also, ATM availability is good but it’s best not to wait until you’re low on cash to find one, especially if you’re heading into less touristy areas.
A practical tip on electricity: Sint Maarten uses the US power system, so travelers from Europe need a plug adapter and voltage converter if necessary. This is important for safely charging electronic devices.
Food lovers will be thrilled to discover the island’s rich culinary scene beyond just Jonny cakes. Try local specialties like conch fritters, fresh seafood dishes, and traditional Caribbean stews. Don’t hesitate to check out street food stalls for authentic flavors and friendly encounters.
For sun protection, the advice to wear sunscreen everywhere, including inside the car, is crucial. Tropical sunshine can be intense and reflected rays can cause burns faster than you expect. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also great additions to your packing list.
Public restrooms can sometimes require payment or purchase to use. It’s a good practice to plan restroom breaks by stopping at cafes or restaurants where you can buy a drink and use their facilities comfortably.
Finally, embracing the relaxed island vibe is part of the magic. Take time to enjoy leisurely beach days at Baie Rouge, join a sunset cruise for stunning views, and savor social moments dining out. Each activity offers a unique way to connect with the island’s culture and natural beauty.
By keeping these additional tips in mind, you can navigate Sint Maarten confidently and fully enjoy the diverse experiences this Caribbean paradise has to offer.
