You know those evenings when you just want to throw your hands up? Being a girl mom to a family of 6 means every dinner is an adventure, often leaning towards the chaotic evening side. Tonight was no exception, but we made it through, and everyone got a hearty plate dinner! I often get asked, 'How do you manage to get dinner on the table for so many every night?' And honestly, some days it feels like a miracle! My biggest secret? Planning ahead, but also embracing the mess. I try to plan our meals for the week on Sunday, focusing on dishes that can be prepped in advance or cooked quickly. Sheet pan dinners, like chicken and veggies, are a lifesaver, and anything that can be made in one pot – think big batches of chili or stew – is a huge win for my family of 6. Tonight, for example, we had a simple pasta bake with a huge salad. The trick to surviving a chaotic evening like this is making sure everyone has their assigned tasks. Even the littlest ones can help set the table or put out the napkins. My older girls are great at helping with vegetable prep or stirring pots (under supervision, of course!). It might not always be perfect, and there's definitely a lot of noise and spilled milk, but those moments around the table are so precious. It’s where we reconnect after a long day, share our stories, and just be a family. One thing I've learned is to let go of the idea of a 'perfect' dinner. It’s okay if there’s a bit of chaos, as long as everyone feels loved and fed. For my family of 6, that means hearty, comforting food that makes them feel full and happy. Dealing with different tastes can be a challenge with so many mouths to feed, but I've found success with 'build-your-own' meals: taco nights, baked potato bars, or even pizza from scratch where everyone can customize their own. This minimizes complaints and maximizes engagement! Another hack I swear by is doubling recipes. If I'm making lasagna, I'll make two and freeze one for a busy night. Batch cooking grains or chopping veggies in advance also saves so much time during the week. And truly, the biggest lesson from my #girlmomlife journey? Take a deep breath, laugh it off, and remember that these messy, noisy, chaotic evenings are the memories we're building. It's not about gourmet meals every night, but about providing nourishment – both for their bodies and their souls. What are your go-to family dinner hacks when life gets a little wild? I'd love to hear your tips on managing dinner for a busy household and getting those plates piled high with love!
