Don’t let children use ChatGPT

As an educator and parent, I often hear the knee-jerk reaction: 'Don't let children use ChatGPT!' While understandable, simply banning it isn't always practical or even the most effective approach in today's AI-driven world. My own experience has shown me that kids are curious; they'll find a way to explore new technologies. Instead of building a wall, I believe it's our role to equip them with the knowledge and skills for responsible engagement. It’s not about letting AI 'DO ALL THE THINKING,' but about ensuring your child is 'PART OF THE CONVERSATION.' Here’s how I approach guiding my own children and students: 1. Teach Critical Thinking First: Before they even type a prompt, I emphasize that AI isn't an all-knowing oracle. We talk about how ChatGPT generates text based on patterns, not understanding. This means its outputs can be biased, inaccurate, or even completely made up. I encourage them to 'SLOW DOWN WHEN YOU ARE GIVING' their prompts and critically evaluate the responses. Is this information reliable? Where would you cross-reference it? This fosters a healthy skepticism crucial for navigating information online, AI-generated or not. 2. AI as a Learning Partner, Not a Cheating Tool: My goal is for them to 'ASK CHATG' (or any AI) to enhance their learning, not bypass it. For instance, if they’re struggling with a concept, I suggest asking ChatGPT to explain it in simpler terms or provide examples. We then review it together. It’s like having a digital tutor, but the human brain still has to process and understand. I tell them, 'NO MATTER WHAT, AND SAY KEEP ME PART OF' the learning process, meaning I want to be involved in how they’re using AI and what they're getting out of it. 3. Focus on Prompt Engineering Skills: The quality of the AI's output largely depends on the quality of the input. I teach them to be specific, clear, and iterative with their prompts. We practice asking follow-up questions to refine responses. This is a valuable skill in itself – learning to communicate precisely and logically. It reinforces the idea that even with AI, human input and guidance are paramount. 4. Discuss Ethical Boundaries: This is where the 'DON'T DO THIS' part comes in, but framed constructively. We talk about plagiarism – using AI to write an essay without understanding or attribution is not acceptable. We discuss privacy and not sharing personal information. These conversations are vital for developing digital citizenship. 5. Supervise and Engage: Just like with any new technology or online activity, supervision is key. I try to be present and engaged when my children are using AI tools. It’s an opportunity to learn alongside them, understand their struggles, and provide immediate guidance. This involvement ensures that 'YOU WILL BE PART OF THE CONVERSATION' rather than just a bystander. Ultimately, the message isn't about fear, but about empowerment. By teaching our children to responsibly 'partner with' tools like ChatGPT, we're preparing them for a future where AI will be ubiquitous, ensuring they are critical thinkers and effective communicators, not just passive consumers of technology.
