Rooted in Love
Scripture:
"That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love..." — Ephesians 3:17 (NKJV)
Devotional:
Why do some believers collapse under the pressures of life while others remain unshakeable? The difference is rarely the intensity of the storm; it is the depth of the foundation. In this profound prayer, Paul uses two powerful metaphors—one from nature and one from architecture—to describe our relationship with God’s love: we must be "rooted" and "grounded."
To be "rooted" means your life is like a tree whose roots go deep into the soil of God’s affection. Just as a tree draws its nutrients and stability from the earth, you are called to draw your identity and strength from His love. To be "grounded" means your life is built on love as an immovable foundation. If your foundation is built on your own performance or the opinions of others, you will be easily shaken. But when you are built on the foundation of Christ's love, you are secure.
Paul also prays that Christ may "dwell" in your heart. This word implies more than a temporary visit; it means to settle down and make a permanent home. Through faith, we allow Christ to occupy every room of our hearts. Today, realize that you don’t have to work to earn God’s love; you are called to simply sink your roots into it. When you know you are deeply loved, you no longer live in fear. You live from a place of total security.
Prayer Activation:
Lord Jesus, I pray that You would dwell in my heart through faith today. I choose to be rooted and grounded in Your love. Let Your affection be the foundation of my life and the source of my stability. Amen
