Okay, so if y'all know the word larp (originally meant live action roleplaying) but TikTok took it as another word for poser, it originally started in the JJK fandom, it got popular now everyone is throwing the word larp around at everyone. It's getting on my nerves and it needs to go, we can't even have an opinion or like a certain character without anyone calling someone a larp, imo poser was way better than larp, why couldn't we just stick with poser instead of larp? #aihoshino

... Read moreAs someone who has followed fandom culture closely, I've noticed how language evolves in these communities—sometimes in ways that can be frustrating or confusing. The term 'larp,' short for live action roleplaying, originally described immersive roleplay events where participants physically act out characters. However, on platforms like TikTok, it's been co-opted to label others as 'posers' or pretenders, especially in the Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) fandom. This shift has led to a lot of tension when fans express their opinions or preferences about characters. Instead of engaging in healthy discussion, people quickly throw around 'larp' as an insult, which dilutes the term's original meaning. From my experience, the word 'poser' felt more straightforward and less toxic—it identified someone pretending without necessarily dismissing their passion. One issue with the new usage of 'larp' is that it can shut down conversations before they even begin. Fans are hesitant to share unpopular opinions for fear of being labeled negatively. This environment can stifle fan creativity and genuine expression. Personally, I believe that fandom spaces should encourage respect and openness, allowing everyone to enjoy and discuss their favorite characters freely. If you're feeling overwhelmed by such terminology, know that these language trends often reflect larger social dynamics in online communities. It's okay to call out misuse while also promoting kindness. Maybe sticking with clearer terms and discouraging blanket insults can help make fandom spaces more welcoming and inclusive. Ultimately, understanding where words come from and how their meanings change over time can empower fans to communicate better and preserve the supportive spirit that draws so many to fandom culture in the first place.
