One of my favorite fall places is now new river gorge national park! It’s so close to home and yet I still didn’t know the rich history! Before the bridge was built, it would take people 30+ minutes to cross the river using the old road. You can now still take the old road and use audio tracks to tell you about the history and scenic pull offs 🥹 it’s definitely a MUST!! ALSO FREE ENTRY!!

... Read moreYou know, sometimes the most incredible places are right under your nose, and for me, that's truly West Virginia. I used to think of it as just a drive-through state, but after really exploring, especially places like New River Gorge National Park, my perspective completely shifted. It's a photographer's dream, offering some of the most breathtaking views and "wv pictures" you could ever hope to capture, living up to its 'Almost Heaven' tagline.
My first visit to New River Gorge was an absolute revelation. While the iconic New River Gorge Bridge itself is a marvel, especially when you learn about its incredible dimensions and the engineering feat it represents, there's so much more to experience. I highly recommend taking the scenic drive along the old road; it's not just a drive, it's a journey back in time. The audio tracks they offer are fantastic, providing such rich history about the area and the bridge's construction. You get to see different perspectives of the bridge, from soaring above to views from below, perfect for capturing those dramatic landscape shots.
For anyone serious about getting those perfect 'west virginia' pictures, definitely explore beyond the main overlooks. I found some hidden gems along the trails. The OCR mentioned 'cliffs with big drops' – and they're right! Always be careful, but the views from some of the rocky overlooks are absolutely unparalleled. I remember standing there, just soaking in the vastness of the gorge, feeling so small yet so connected to nature. And speaking of hidden gems, don't miss looking for spots like the 'small cave opening formed by large rock formations' that the OCR picked up. It adds a fascinating element to your exploration and makes for unique photo opportunities, especially with interesting light.
The beauty of New River Gorge isn't just limited to the fall, even though it's my personal favorite for the vibrant foliage. Spring brings lush greenery and blooming wildflowers, while summer offers opportunities for rafting and enjoying the river. Even winter, with a dusting of snow, transforms the landscape into a serene, almost magical wonderland, offering a completely different aesthetic for your photos. Remember, entry to this national park is free, making it an accessible adventure for everyone.
Beyond the gorge, West Virginia continues to surprise. From the rolling Appalachian mountains to charming small towns, there's a unique character to this state that just begs to be explored. Whether you're into hiking, history, or simply want to find stunning backdrops for your 'wv pictures,' this state has an abundance of natural beauty. My tip for fellow adventurers? Pack good hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and most importantly, keep your camera ready. You never know what incredible vista or historical detail you'll discover around the next bend. It’s truly a place that leaves a lasting impression, making you want to return again and again.
