Calisthenics and my sonš„°
When I first thought about introducing my son to calisthenics, I wasn't really sure where to start. But seeing his boundless energy, I knew we needed an activity that was fun, challenging, and built real strength. Thatās how we stumbled into the world of calisthenics, and honestly, itās been one of the best decisions weāve made for him! One of the biggest 'benefits' I've noticed is how much stronger and more coordinated he's become. We started with really simple movements ā think modified push-ups against a wall, gentle squats, and even just playing around with hanging from a bar. Slowly but surely, he began mastering these foundational moves. Itās not just about big muscles; it's about developing functional strength that helps with everything from playing sports to just navigating the playground safely. His balance has improved dramatically, and Iāve seen a huge boost in his overall agility. Beyond the physical, the 'progress' we've tracked has also shown incredible mental and emotional gains. Calisthenics teaches discipline and patience. Some moves take time to learn, and thereās a lot of trial and error. This process has really helped him with problem-solving and perseverance. When he finally nails a new skill, the pride on his face is just priceless! It builds incredible self-confidence, knowing he can achieve challenging things through consistent effort. It's empowering for kids to feel strong and capable in their own bodies. For other parents wondering how to get started, my advice is to keep it playful and never force it. We made it a game! We'd challenge each other, or I'd turn exercises into animal movements. For instance, bear crawls are a fantastic full-body exercise that kids naturally enjoy. Look up kid-friendly routines online ā there are tons of ideas on YouTube and yes, even TikTok! I often share little snippets of his routines on platforms like TikTok (under @samsterd45.0, if you want to see some examples!), because it's a great way to document his progress and keep him motivated. Seeing himself improve in videos is a huge confidence booster. 'Tracking progress' doesn't have to be complicated. For us, it's a mix of informal observation and sometimes counting reps. Initially, it was about consistency ā showing up a few times a week. Then, as he got stronger, weād note if he could hold a plank longer or do one more pull-up. The most important thing is to celebrate every small victory. Itās not about perfection, but continuous improvement. We even have a little chart where he puts a sticker for every new skill mastered or a personal best achieved. Safety is always key, of course. Ensure they have proper form for their age and strength level, and always supervise. Start slow, listen to their bodies, and make sure it remains a positive experience. Calisthenics has not only given my son a fantastic outlet for his energy but has also instilled a love for fitness and a strong, healthy foundation that I hope will last a lifetime. Itās truly amazing to witness his journey and see him grow into such a resilient and capable little athlete.
