Happy Making Hexagons!

Happy Making Hexagons! While on vacation at the beginning of July I started making fabric hexagons from these two beautiful patriotic fabric charm packs, Freedom Garden and American Beauty. I hand stitched the hexagons at my parent’s house, in the car on the way to and from Springfield, Missouri as well as in the hotel. I’ve workinf on these in my downtime and in between other projects and various tasks.

The flowers will be quilted onto a white background then made into a rag quilt. The large squares will become pillows. My mind rests (Zone In To Zone Out). Hexagons make my mind rest and my heart happy.

Using charm packs such as Freedom Garden and American Beauty adds a patriotic flair to your projects, making them perfect for holiday decorations or meaningful gifts. Hexagon quilting involves sewing together six-sided fabric pieces, which can be arranged in various intricate floral or geometric patterns that bring visual interest and texture to quilts and pillows. This method often uses English paper piecing, a technique where fabric is basted around paper templates to ensure precision and ease of stitching. It allows quilters to work on their projects anywhere—be it at home, on the road, or in a hotel—as it doesn’t require bulky sewing machines during the preparation phase. The hand-stitching process promotes mindfulness and relaxation, which many quilters find therapeutic. Once the hexagons are assembled, quilters often add batting and backing layers, then quilt the top for durability and decorative effect—rag quilts, for instance, have exposed seam allowances that create a cozy, textured look after washing. Large hexagonal or square sections can be transformed into practical items like pillows, enhancing home decor with personalized, handcrafted touches. For those interested in starting their own hexagon quilting project, gather coordinated fabric charm packs, hexagon templates, sewing needles, and thread. Joining quilting communities online or locally can provide inspiration, support, and tips for mastering this craft. Embracing the process allows one to create not only beautiful, patriotic-themed textiles but also to enjoy the mental rest and heartwarming satisfaction that comes from handmade artistry.
