Beet juice (a poem about uncertainty and escaping)

“What do you do when you may not feel regulated enough for a yoga practice. Like you’re so restless the mat space feels unsafe. What happens….”

I almost wrote this to send to a pal and then I deleted it. I didn’t want to be a burden, I tell myself.

My girlfriend told me to focus on my homestead without visions of what my man wants, but who can afford such luxuries.

You don’t know what I’ve seen.

I have forgiven the hands that tried to drown me.

But at what cost… only time will tell.

I am persistent, and resistant, and unwell.

Everything that once was soft about me — has hardened like a shell.

I pass by my reflection and don’t recognize, I feel this might not end well.

As I type the rain gets heavier. As I sigh the weight feels lighter. But they try to take the sigh away from you. They ask you, “what do you have… to complain about”

My sister sends me a picture in a bullet proof vest and all I can do is hope that war won’t put my love to rest.

Forever jaded, forever hopeful.

But maybe fear, is a mouthful.

And hope, is the downfall.

... Read morePoetry often serves as a mirror to our inner turmoil and collective experiences. In times of uncertainty, many turn to creative expression as a release. The themes of reflection, as expressed in this poem, resonate deeply within a society grappling with various uncertainties, such as mental health struggles and global issues. As we navigate our personal battles, it’s important to remember that our feelings are valid and shared by countless others. Engaging with poetry can provide comfort and a sense of connection, encouraging us to explore our emotions. The imagery of rain in the poem not only illustrates the heaviness of external circumstances but also symbolizes the cleansing and rejuvenating potential of our own emotions. This duality reflects a universal truth: even in moments of fear and doubt, there lies an opportunity for growth and hope. Embracing the complexities of our feelings through art helps foster a greater understanding of ourselves and others, promoting empathy and connection in a fragmented world. As we explore themes of isolation and resilience, remember that poetry offers a safe space to confront and express both pain and hope. Engaging with similar works can guide readers into a deeper exploration of their feelings and may inspire their own creative journeys.
