Lessons learned in my debut year

SKY'S END hasn't even been out for a year, but I feel like I've learned so many lessons this year.

1. Going to bookstores is incredible. It gives you a chance to talk with readers and booksellers. I highly recommend it. 5/5 stars

2. Conferences are intense. They're an overload of the senses, but they're also amazing opportunities. There's often so much excitement that by the time my head hits the hotel room's pillow at night, I'm asleep in two seconds flat.

3. Managing my work/life has been tough! Last school year, I was teaching full time while simultaneously promoting SKY'S END and editing AMONG SERPENTS and writing DOWNFALL. On top of that, having an adult sci-fi title on submission to publishers, raising kids, and finding time to spend with my wife. It was so busy. That's why I went part-time teaching this year. It has freed up writing time in the morning and I'm not as exhausted or stressed anymore.

4. Okay, meeting readers is one of the best things ever! Seriously, very little compares to the first time a reader drove several hours to meet me at a bookstore event, and she was visibly shaking as she greeted me. Wow...

5. Everyone has opinions, and not everyone is going to like what you created. That's totally fine. But I'll never forget the first time I decided to read a one-star review of SKY'S END. Ouch. 0/5 stars. Do not recommend reading one-star reviews. 🤣

Other things I do recommend:

-Hitting the NYT bestseller list

-Announcing your book being in early development as a film to your students

-Sleeping

-Peanut butter and cookie dough milkshakes

Other things I do NOT recommend:

-Getting an infection after having a wisdom tooth removed

-Getting between your dog and her food

-Drinking Tabasco from the bottle to impress your students

-Raw onions

... Read moreIt's truly wild how much you learn in just one year, especially when you're diving headfirst into something as challenging and rewarding as being a debut author. My first year with 'SKY'S END' out in the world has been a whirlwind, and looking back, there are so many practical insights I wish I'd fully grasped from day one. It's not just about writing the book; it's about navigating the entire ecosystem, from connecting with readers to managing your own well-being. One of the biggest takeaways for me was the sheer power of bookstore events. You see, I used to think these were just promotional gigs, but they're so much more. They’re a chance to genuinely connect. When you’re at a table, signing copies of 'SKY'S END' and chatting with someone who drove hours just to meet you – that's pure magic. My advice? Don't just show up. Engage. Ask readers what they loved, what they connected with. Listen to booksellers; they’re your allies. These events aren't just selling books; they're building a community, one conversation at a time. It's a reminder that there are real people behind those sales numbers, and their enthusiasm is incredibly motivating. Then there are conferences. Oh, the intensity! The OCR images of me at various festivals truly capture the energy. They are an absolute sensory overload, but also goldmines for learning and networking. For any aspiring or new author, my personal experience suggests having a game plan. Decide who you want to meet, which panels you want to attend, and be prepared for spontaneous connections. I found that stepping away for short breaks, even just to grab a quick coffee, helped me process everything. Don't feel pressured to be 'on' 24/7. It’s about quality interactions, not quantity, and respecting your own energy levels. You'll thank yourself when you're not completely burnt out by day two. The whole concept of work/life balance became incredibly real. Before 'SKY'S END' launched, I was juggling full-time teaching, promoting the book, editing another, and writing yet another! Plus, family life. The OCR caption 'Work/life balance matters!' couldn't be more accurate. It felt like I was constantly running on fumes. Making the decision to go part-time teaching was a game-changer. It freed up my mornings for focused writing and significantly reduced my stress. My personal tip? Be honest with yourself about your limits. It's okay to scale back or delegate when you can. Your creativity and well-being will thank you. Find what recharges you, whether it's dedicated writing time or simply sleeping more, and protect it fiercely. Finally, let's talk about reviews. The image of me looking dismayed with the caption 'I shouldn't read reviews!' is spot-on. As much as positive reviews lift you up, the negative ones can sting, sometimes disproportionately. My honest advice from personal experience is to develop a thick skin, but also, for your mental health, create boundaries. Don't obsess over one-star reviews. They are part of the process, and not every book is for every reader. Focus on the readers who do connect with your work, and the valuable feedback that helps you grow. It’s a tough lesson, but an essential one for any creative person putting their work out there. Remember why you started writing 'SKY'S END' in the first place, and let that passion guide you.

Lessons I’ve Learned In My 40s
Honestly… nobody warned me how good it would feel over here. Your 40s don’t always look like a glow-up or a comeback. Sometimes, they’re quieter than that. It looks like saying no without explaining. Protecting your peace like it’s a full-time job. Letting God lead instead of forcing doors
