How I Finished Basic Training!

🪖Bring Absolutely the bare minimum! ( phone charger, phone, 2 sets of clothing, earphones, snacks *eat before getting off plane*) THAT IS IT!!

🪖Understand you may not get letters and that’s okay doesn’t mean your family doesn’t love you! Y’all will talk on Sundays!

🪖Get excited everyday is a day closer to the finish line

Enjoy the time w/ your battles you may not see them again for a looong time

🪖Don’t get scared cause of how chaotic everything is find comfort in self and be firm as rock in your mind.

🪖You can use all those hours of standing learning who you are inside & out

🪖Basic doesn’t just make you a great soldier but it builds a better bond between your heart and mind but, it’s up to you.

🪖Something back at home will happen that will make you feel like leaving… DONT. I cannot stress this enough DO NOT LEAVE!

... Read moreHey everyone! Since I just came out of basic training, I wanted to share even more insights and practical steps that really helped me, beyond just the quick tips. It's a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience, and having a bit more info beforehand can make a huge difference. First off, let's talk about Pre-Basic Prep: What to Really Focus On. The original post mentions packing the bare minimum, and I can't stress this enough. Seriously, think minimalist! Beyond your phone, charger, clothes, and snacks for the journey there, don't overthink it. You'll be issued everything you need. What is crucial to pack, mentally, is an attitude of adaptability. I heard so many stories about people bringing sentimental items they later regretted or struggled to keep track of. My advice? Pack light, literally and figuratively. Make sure your physical fitness is in decent shape – you don't need to be a marathon runner, but a solid foundation of running, push-ups, and sit-ups will make those initial weeks much less of a shock. I remember those first few runs; it was definitely a 'just keep swimming!' moment! Next up, Navigating the Mental Game. This is where most people struggle, not necessarily with the physical demands. The OCR mentioned "Mind over matter. It's 10 weeks not the end of the world," and that really resonated with me. There will be chaotic moments, but finding comfort in yourself and staying firm as a rock in your mind is key. I learned to use those hours of standing and waiting to truly understand who I am, inside and out. Don't be afraid to be open to change and adjusting to your current circumstances. Things will change constantly, and resisting it only adds to the stress. Remember, even the Drill Sergeants are humans too! Treating them with respect, understanding their role, and following instructions makes your life, and theirs, a lot easier. It's about learning the system and adapting. Building Your Tribe: Lifelong Friendships. The original article briefly touched on enjoying time with your battles, and the imagery of making lifelong friendships in Columbia, SC (from the OCR) is so true! These people are going through the exact same thing as you, side-by-side. Lean on them, support them, and don't be afraid to let your guard down a little (when appropriate, of course!). Some of my closest friends now are people I met in basic. We shared laughs, struggles, and pushed each other to keep going. They really can be better than you could imagine! Sundays were our time to connect with family, and while letters might be rare, those phone calls were gold. Managing expectations about communication is important for your peace of mind and your family’s. Finally, Overcoming Challenges & The Finish Line. There will be moments, believe me, when something back home happens that makes you feel like leaving. DO NOT. I cannot stress this enough. Focus on the end goal. Every single day is a day closer to the finish line. Basic training isn't just about making you a great soldier; it builds a better bond between your heart and mind. Embrace the rucking – "pack light 2 heavy" is great advice – and the physical demands as opportunities for growth. It’s an experience that truly transforms you. You'll look back and realize how much stronger, more disciplined, and more resilient you've become. Stick with it, push through, and remember your 'why.' You've got this!
