It's not uncommon for people to feel they aren't close with certain relatives, even if these family ties exist on paper. From my experience, these feelings often stem from a combination of physical distance, lack of frequent interaction, or differing personalities and life experiences. One reason many struggle to connect with an aunt might be the lack of shared history or meaningful conversations growing up. Unlike parents or siblings, aunts and uncles often play less central roles in daily family life, so opportunities to build a strong bond can be limited. This can lead to a sense of detachment, where hearing phrases like "I'm not close with my aunt" is more common than you might expect. To bridge this gap, I’ve found that deliberate efforts to reach out and engage in one-on-one interactions help. Simple activities like sharing memories, asking about life experiences, or inviting an aunt to family events can foster closeness. Social media and video calls today also offer valuable tools to maintain connections across distances. Ultimately, it’s important to accept that not every family relationship will be deeply intimate, and that’s okay. What matters is understanding the reasons behind the distance, respecting boundaries, and focusing on meaningful connections where they naturally grow. Being open and communicative can transform family ties, even those that initially feel distant or unfamiliar.
