Toxic Positivity: Why I Stopped Faking Positivity

The first of the month always brings pressure. Rent is due, bills pile up, new goals get set. And people say: “Just stay positive and push through.” 

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡: that is 𝘵𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺. It skips reality and pressures you to pretend. 

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛, 𝐈 𝐤𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: 

“At least you’ll get another one.” 

“At least you’re free from that place.” 

“At least you can start fresh.” 

It was meant to help, but it dismissed the rage, shame, and disappointment I actually felt. 

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝: 

🍋 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 

Saying it out loud (“I’m angry,” “I’m scared”) takes the power away from the swirl in your head. It separates you from the emotion. 

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘵: When I wrote down “I feel ashamed,” I stopped replaying it silently in my head. 

🍋 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫 

Bottled emotions expand. A journal or voice note is like a pressure valve, it lets the feelings out without dumping them on others. 

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘵: My voice notes became the one place I could unload without judgment. 

🍋 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥 

Denial (“I’m fine”) adds pressure. Honest reframes (“I’m struggling, but I’m figuring it out”) create relief. 

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘵: I stopped forcing “I’m okay” and instead gave myself permission to not be okay yet. 

That is how I stopped faking positivity and started resetting with truth.
