Why My Chest Tightens When Nothing’s Wrong

Sometimes it happens out of nowhere. 

I’ll be driving, folding laundry, or walking Mimi and suddenly my chest tightens for no reason. 

Nothing is wrong, but my body doesn’t believe that yet. 

After years of pressure and always needing to stay alert, calm can feel suspicious. Like my nervous system doesn’t know what to do with peace. 

It took me a while to realize it wasn’t random. It was my body remembering what survival used to feel like. The overthinking. The overdoing. The pretending I was fine when I wasn’t. 

My doctor called it stress, but it felt deeper. It felt like my body was still standing guard long after the danger was gone. 

What helped was slowing down long enough to listen. Writing down what I was feeling, even when it didn’t make sense. Stepping outside. Taking a breath that didn’t need to lead anywhere. 

Now, when my chest tightens, I remind myself: You’re safe now. 

I don’t rush to fix it. I let my body remember what calm feels like. 

It’s not weakness. It’s awareness. 

It’s learning to trust safety again.
