# # # * * Morphology and Birth Process of Scepter and Inverted Scepter Quartz Mineral Crystals (Scepter and Inverted Scepter Quartz) * *
Scepter and Inverted Scepter-shaped quartz mineral crystals are among the morphologies that have attracted much attention in mineral deposition circles. These quaint shapes are geological records that indicate fluctuations in environmental conditions during crystallization in crust crevices. This process involves sudden or ripple chemical and physical changes of hydrothermal fluids.
* * 1.Morphological Classifications * *
The main characteristics of this group are the combination of two main crystals: the Basal Crystal, the first crystals formed, and the Terminal Crystal, the second crystals that grow overlapping or continuing from the original crystals, divided into two main types:
* * * Traditional Scepters: * *
The apex crystals are wider in diameter and larger than the base crystals, growing to cover the apex of the first crystals, similar in appearance to the king's mace. This growth is caused by the new ripple solution having a higher silica saturation or a temperature and pressure that allows the crystals to spread out on the sides of the original core.
* * * Inverted Scepters / Reverse Scepters: * *
The pinnacle crystals are smaller in diameter and narrower than the base crystals, growing protruding from the center or apex region of the base crystals; an obvious example is quartz ore from the Selvino deposits in Italy (as shown in the image above). This pattern is often caused by a decrease in the free space to grow, or a significant decrease in the amount of silica solution, leaving crystallization limited to the apex region of the original crystals.
* * 2. Geological Formation & Hydrothermal Environment * *
The occurrence of crystals superimposed in this way is not caused by continuous growth in a single plunge, but by a "multi-generational growth process," also known as Epitaxy overgrowth, in which the atomic structure of the second-generation crystals still perfectly aligns with the crystal core of the first generation.
* * * Stage 1 Base Crystalline Formation: * * A hydrothermal solution with constant temperature and pressure has crystallized into the first quartz core. Over time, the solution may dry up, temperature drop, or the geological gap is closed over, causing growth hiatus.
* * * Stage 2 Accent Crystalline Growth: * * * When a new geological movement occurs, a second ripple hydrothermal solution with different chemical, temperature, and pressure properties flows back into the mineral cavity. This new solution will use the tip of the first crystalline as a foundation for further growth.
* * 3. Chemical and Physical Variations * *
Changes in properties of new ripple solutions, leading to a clear difference between base crystals and apex crystals, in many dimensions including:
* * * Color and mineral type differences: * * It is very common for base and top crystals to have completely different colors, such as rock crystal or smoky quartz, but the top crystals are purple Amethyst, as seen in many examples of the picture. This is caused by the infusion of new trace elements, such as iron (Fe) with subsequent exposure to natural radiation.
* * * Quality and Clarity Differences: * * Each time solution may have an uneven rate of cooling. If the new ripple cools quickly, the top crystals may have more internal blemishes, cracks, or defects (Inclusions) than the base crystals. On the other hand, if the environment is very suitable, the top crystals may be clearer and cleaner than the base core.
* * * Seamless Growth Cohesion: * * * Although crystals form different periods, in conditions where the crystal structure is fully coordinated, the seam between the base and the peak may seem visually seamless (Seamless), but in depth mineralogical analysis, the growth seam (Phantom lines or growth interfaces) that clearly divides the incidence of the two phases of solution can still be found.
