The physical prominence is the color contrast between the translucent and sharp angular geometric lecontite crystals and the amminite base, which has a crystal structure that gives a bright blue color.

Lecontite is an extremely rare sulfate group mineral with the chemical formula NaNH SO · 2H O (Sodium ammonium sulfate dihydrate). Previously, only a few lecontite crystals were discovered from the first discovery site (Type Locality) in a cave in Honduras, where crystals found in the past were often just opaque turquoise island stains (Crusts). Finding lecontite in a crystalline manner that was translucent and formed in conjunction with another mineral in Chile is therefore very important information in the study of mineral genesis.

Amminite is a new mineral that was recently certified in 2008 with the chemical formula CuCl · 2NH. It is now found in only three places around the world, with Chile as the first source of discovery.

The joint formation of these two rare earths is formed by an extremely specific geological and biochemical environment. The microbiological degradation of these manure produces concentrated nitrogen and ammonia compounds that seep down to react with copper and sulfate ore in the rock layer, creating a new mineral with ammonia elements in the crystal structure.

When the ore from this source was discovered at an early stage, its blue-colored physical appearance caused a misidentification of the ore type, understood to be Blödite, perched on Crohnkite, a copper sulfate ore more common in Chile.

Mineral scientists rely on the X-Ray Diffraction or XRD technique, which is the most accurate method of analyzing crystal structure at the atomic level. The results of the XRD analysis can confirm completely different crystal structures and eventually lead to the discovery of even rarer minerals like lecontite on amminite bases. The combination of these two minerals has not yet been reported from any other source in the world, thus constituting the most academically important mineral sample.
