Water Or Soil For Your Plants?

Someone listed this monstera on facebook marketplace for free because it was on its last leg. It was originally potted in soil (and had pests/ a lot of dying foliage). It’s been growing hydroponically under a grow light (which it’s outgrown) for the last 6 months and has pushed out 5 new leaves since transferring it to water. I find I’ve had a lot more luck with hydroponics (or semi hydroponics) than I have with soil. What is your preference?

... Read moreIn my experience, choosing between water (hydroponics) and soil for your plants, especially Monstera, can significantly impact their health and growth pace. While soil has traditionally been the go-to medium for many indoor gardeners, hydroponics offers a compelling alternative, particularly for plants struggling with pests and root rot common in soil setups. Hydroponics involves growing plants in a nutrient-rich water solution without soil. This method allows you to closely monitor nutrient levels and pH balance, which can lead to faster and more robust growth. For example, I once rescued a struggling Monstera that was infested with pests and had dying leaves while potted in soil. Transferring it to a hydroponic setup under a grow light not only gave it a healthier environment but also promoted the emergence of several new leaves within months. On the other hand, soil offers natural support and contains beneficial microorganisms that can enhance nutrient uptake. However, soil-grown plants are more prone to issues like overwatering, improper drainage, and pest infestations. If you prefer a low-tech, natural approach and are prepared to manage these quirks, soil can still be very effective. A semi-hydroponic method, where a plant is potted in an inert medium like LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) combined with water reservoirs, can offer the best of both worlds. This approach improves aeration and reduces pests while maintaining some structural support for plant roots. Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preferences, plant species, and your ability to manage the chosen system. Hydroponics may require more initial setup and monitoring but can reward you with faster plant recovery and growth, as I’ve personally witnessed with my Monstera. Soil demands less technical know-how but may pose challenges if pests or diseases strike. If you're curious, start with a plant that’s been having trouble thriving in soil and experiment with hydroponics or semi-hydroponics. You'll likely find that consistent nutrient delivery and root oxygenation make a big difference, and your plants will thank you with healthier leaves and joyful growth progress.
