poor drainage can cause root rot and a failing root system will always lead to a dying plant.
so how do you get healthy plants without overpaying at a nursery?
📍go to home depot or lowes and buy plants under $25. you can find expensive tropical plants for cheap bc they are potted in very poor quality soil. but we're going to fix that!
👀 look for healthy green leaves. overcrowding is okay!
📝 buy: a proper sized pot (room to grow but not oversized) and CACTUS SOIL (orange bag)
🏡 go home, put the plant in a corner for a week to let the old soil dry out. this will minimize shock to the pant and allow any bugs in the soil to die. it will also prevent your existing plants from contracting any infections.
🍃 take out of pot at the end of the week, remove loose soil but don't over disturb the root bulb, and pot into the new soil and pot. I like to mix cactus soil, orchid bark, and perlite to make a custom mix depending on the plant, but using just cactus soil is a good start! this soil is designed with good drainage in mind and will keep your plants healthy.
💧 DON'T overwater! it's better to forget than to hover. when should you water? stick your pointer finger in to the first line on your finger. if it comes out dry then it's time to water. otherwise, leave it alone! most plants are fine being watered once every 1-2 weeks.
