Lunar New Year Themed Sourdough

My partners buddy at work requested a loaf. my partner, who likes to go above and beyond, requested I make it lunar New Year themed as we spent the last one with him and his family. Here it is! Year of the snake! I can't believe that this is my third loaf and I already accomplished a fancy design!

... Read moreWow, you guys! I'm still buzzing from my latest sourdough adventure. When my partner told me his friend wanted a loaf and suggested a Lunar New Year theme, my mind immediately went to 'how can I make this truly special?' Especially since we spent the last Lunar New Year with them! Being only on my third loaf, I admit I was a little nervous about attempting a fancy design. But hey, that's what a sourdough journey is all about, right? Pushing your limits! I decided to go all out and create a 'Year of the Snake' sourdough design. It felt like a perfect way to honor the occasion. For those of you wondering how I tackled this as a relative newbie, it really comes down to a few key things. First, having a well-proofed dough is crucial. A good, firm dough gives you a much cleaner canvas for scoring. I made sure my final proof was cold, which helps the dough hold its shape better during scoring. When it came to the actual 'Year of the Snake' design, I started by sketching out a simple snake shape on a piece of parchment paper. You can find tons of inspiration online for simple animal outlines. Then, I gently transferred the outline onto my floured dough using either a small, sharp knife or even a stencil if you're feeling less confident. For the snake's scales or details, I used a Lame (a special scoring tool) at an angle, making shallow cuts to create texture without deflating the loaf too much. Don't be afraid to practice on a scrap piece of dough or even a ball of play-doh first! That's part of achieving your 'sourdough dreams' – experimenting. If you're thinking about creating your own themed sourdough, especially for celebrations like Lunar New Year, here are a few beginner-friendly tips I learned: Plan your design: Think about what element of the theme you want to highlight. Is it a symbol, a character, or a general pattern? Simple is often best when you're starting out. Flour helps! Dusting your dough generously with flour before scoring makes your design pop and gives you a clearer visual guide. You can also use cocoa powder for darker designs on a light crust. Sharp tools are your friend: A super sharp Lame or even a razor blade is essential for clean cuts. Dull tools will drag and ruin your design. Cold dough is easier to work with: Chilling your dough for at least 30 minutes before scoring makes it firmer and less prone to tearing. Don't fret perfection: Remember, it's homemade! The beauty is in the effort and the unique touch you add. My 'Year of the Snake' sourdough design wasn't absolutely perfect, but it had character, and that's what makes it special. This sourdough journey has been so rewarding. From just trying to get a good rise to now attempting intricate designs after only three loaves, it truly shows that with a little patience and practice, anyone can create something beautiful in the kitchen. It brought so much joy to gift this special Lunar New Year themed loaf, and seeing the reaction made all the effort worthwhile. Keep baking, everyone, and let your sourdough dreams come to life!
