The main reason I’m no longer doing sourdough is….

it gives me migraines. 🙄

The actual yeast that is created in a sourdough starter can give certain people migraines. It’s me 👋🏽 I’m certain people 🙄

Second, it’s not cheap. Especially getting started. Figuring out how to keep it active, all the equipment to get it started. The discard vs what you have to add. It’s not a cheap project to begin!

Long story short. Love a good sourdough. Love a good sourdough starter. It’s just not for me and my family!

For those of you just starting your own sourdough adventure, or if you're looking to make your current journey a bit smoother, I’ve picked up a few tips along the way that might help keep your 'sourdough emoji' count high! First, don't let the initial setup costs deter you. You don't need fancy equipment right away. A simple glass jar, kitchen scale, and some flour and water are enough to get a robust starter going. Many online communities offer free starter donations, or you can even cultivate your own from scratch with just a few days of consistent feeding. It's much more budget-friendly than buying a pre-made one! Regarding the time commitment, which can feel overwhelming, remember that sourdough can fit into your schedule. You can refrigerate your starter to slow down its activity, needing feeds less frequently. This makes it much more manageable for busy weeks. And don't forget about all the amazing ways to use up your sourdough discard! Beyond just another *sourdough bread loaf*, you can make delicious pancakes, waffles, crackers, or even attempt fun creations like my pop tart (though maybe with more success!). Recipes like these ensure nothing goes to waste and add a practical, yummy dimension to your baking efforts. So, while my body told me it was time to step back from the daily sourdough routine, I still cheer on all of you passionate bakers!
